Does anyone know if it is possible to change the with of the borders in
Thunderbird?

"the" borders? You might want to be a bit more specific for us to help you.
It's probably possible by editing some CSS file in some JAR file somewhere.

and try asking in forums or look in Mozillazine Knowledge Base
Since i,m not real sure what are asking all I can suggest is try
The Quote Colors adds an user interface for configuring text and
background colors for different quote levels when displaying messages
(up to 5 levels currently).

Yeah, sorry about that! It does sound a bit vague when I read it again. :(

Anyway, I meant the borders between the 3 panes that are displayed when
Thunderbird is launched.

Anyone got an answer?

If not, I'll pop over to http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/ as
suggested by wexwimpy.
