Thunderbird and Automatic Dial-Up Connection

I am trying out Mozilla Thunderbird as my newsgroup reader and if all
goes well I will make it my email reader as well. But I am having a
problem as the Dialup Connection does not automatically start when I
open the Thunderbird program. What settings do I need to make to cause
this to happen.
