I work with a large number of picture files on an HP
Pavillion zd7010us laptop computer running HP's version of
the XP home OS. It has an NVidia video card.
My problem is that the thumbnail view of my files takes
forever (45sec to 1.5 min depending on the number of files
in a folder) to create the thumbnail views of these
files. NOT BAD on the first time in the folder, but they
don't stay cached when the computer is turned off! The
next time I go to that folder, it's re-write time. (They
do stay if I don't turn the computer off, but this is a
laptop, it gets turned off often.)
Every time I open a folder, my window stays blank for 45
to 85 seconds until the thumbnails are drawn. If I run my
cursor accross the screen I get properties popups, and
sometimes a thumbnail, or part of a thumbnail will appear,
but the whole process takes the above time.
I have done all critical and non-critical windows updates,
as well as a couple from HP.
I have unchecked the box in folder options which says DO
NOT CACHE THUMBNAILS. (gotta love a double negative
option! Don't check the box if you don't want the option.
How about checking a box to get the option?) I have
applied this to all folders. I have reset all settings,
and then done this agian. I have gone into folder
properties and set it to pictures (best for many
files)...because I have many files.
I show a thumbs.db file in each of my folders where the
thumbnails have been created once.
I have cleared my cookies, temp internet files, and turned
off all startup programs except for Norton.
I've done most of these things prior to contacting HP, and
then again with two HP techs on line with me. THREE HOURS
LATER, my thumbnails still don't stay cached.
Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks,
Brad
