The my pictures file no longer shown the thumbs or the filmstrip and I'm
confused as to why.

All I see is the program icon that i use to open the file and I have changed
the "program to open file" several times to see if it was that program. It is
not.

The icons on the folders are OK and the picture files opens and displays
properly.

Any ideas?

Try this, maybe it will restore the option:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

John, I'll bet you'd like to put this on a billboard somewhere!

...or maybe just the instructions to search Google Groups. ;-)

More seriously, isn't there a question about what is unregistering
this service for all these folks?

I suspect the cause is usually related to
something that has been installed recently...
either a program or an update.

The following article discusses an update
that caused this issue for many users:

WMF exploit
