When I select the thumbs view in My Pictures, they come up
a dark gray. Manually refreshing by using the images
context menu fixes the problem, but I have many, many
pictures. This behavior started recently, and it affects
all of the formats. Will someone please advise as to a fix
for this problem?
Many thanks.

Have you tried using the controls on your monitor, like contrast, brightness???
Thumbnails are very compressed, thus the color distortion.

.Monitor & GPU settings OK. As I wrote, a manual refresh
from the image properties menu cleans it up. I've done a
system restore with no improvements, virus scans show no
probs, checked recently installed apps and found no probs.
This is first time for this in 3 years with this sys.
Thanks for your input.

It does sound like a monitor problem. Maybe try to see if there is a driver
update for your video card, that sometimes helps. Even if there is a corrupt
driver, and update would repair that.

After my prior post, I noticed that I could refresh as many thumbnails as I
could select with a "Ctrl-A". One right click and choosing "Refresh
Thumbnail" cleared up as many as 212 thumbnails for me. Still, I would still
like to know what causes the dark gray in the first place and why Microsoft
seems to have anticipated such a problem.
