I am using XP home.
Can thumbdrives be given a name instead of a letter?
If so, how?
Thanks

In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right click on the drive letter and then
left click on Rename. Assign a legal name and OK out. Use safe removal
feature for the drive and then unplug it. Plug it in again and see if the
name shows in Explorer and/or My Computer. XP and Vista machines should
show the name as well as the assigned drive letter. Earlier versions of
Windows may or may not show the name (Win 2000 does not (at least on the one
I use at work.))

Yes, if you assign the drive to an NTFS junction point (also known as a
mount point) instead of a drive letter.

For example, my USB 'thumb' drive is mapped to an empty folder in the
root of C: called Leonard's Drive.

For example,

Charles,
If you want ONLY NAMES to show and so to hide the drive-letters
from being displayed in explorer, then copy and paste the following into a
text file and re-name it, giving it a .reg extension. Then double-click
upon it and click [ok] to accept.

------------ copy between lines only ------------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"ShowDriveLettersFirst"=dword:00000004

------------ copy between lines only ------------

....this will make explorer show JUST THE NAMES. To undo - just change the
'4' to a '0' in the script above, save the file again and import as before.

BeeCeeBee,
Nevertheless, they have designed Windows so that it can
be done and the OP said he wanted "name instead of a letter" so I just
provided the answer to THAT question. If he didn't REALLY want to hide the
letters he doesn't have to but, he's got a choice now, hasn't he?

To me, it would be easier to open a thumb drive with a name attached to the
drive. i don't care if I have a drive named "Office 2007 files" an then a
drive letter at the end.
I have 4 thumb drives that i plan on using and giving them a name would be
easier for me.
thanks for the fast reply and don't forget I am new to this stuff.

It is no more difficult to change the name of an external drive than it
is to change the name of any file. Just right click on "My computer" and
then the drive and rename it.

In XP home the name should just show up immediately. It will, however,
continue to show the assigned drive letter in parenthesis after the
name.

I cant think of a good reason why you would want to hide the drive
letter assigned.

BeeCeeBee, please get a decent newsreader (Outlook Express, Windows Mail,
Windows Live Mail are provided by Microsoft either in the OS or download and
others are available) instead of replying through those nasty forums as
shown in your signature. We appreciate any help you give others on this
newsgroup but you replied to my post and not the original poster's (OP). I
provided a valid answer to the OP but with your post "hanging" onto mine it
looks like you are trying to disagree with me. I know that is not the case
however.

Every post you have made are hanging onto other helper's posts and you don't
copy the previous posts which leaves out important information. Makes the
thread really hard to read and follow. Thanks for understanding!

Have you been sleeping the past couple of weeks when every post
"BeeCeeBee" made promoted the web interface he/she's using?

BCB owns it and is not likely to stop using it.

Not really, I just ignore signature lines on all posts unless I have a
reason to look at them, I get tired of all the spamming in the sigs. Just
ignored BCB's signature that way.

He has cut the line above the sig that used to invite people to the
board. He only changed it to just the sig when threatened he'd be
reported as a spammer.

Do I post through a forum, Yes.
Do I own the forum or have a financial interest in it? NO.
Do we post here in the hope that someone will join the forum? Yes.
Did I remove a tag from my posts? Yes because I was not aware that the
simple "posted through tag was already there.
Posting through the forum allows us to moderate what our members post
as coming through the forum and would not allow anything to be posted
here that we would not be allowed on our own forum pages.
We post only where we think we may be helpful. It would be easy to just
throw in posts but that is not what we do. If someone like what we have
to say and wants to come take a look that is appreciated.

Now I understand that people who are die hard newsgroup participants
like to put down the forums but the "holier then thou" attitude just
doesn't wash (Although it is pretty tame here compared to others.)

One thing that I have noticed and this thread is a good example. There
are very few posts asking why someone wants something and far to many
displays of knowledge apparently for its own sake. Yes you can remove
the drive letter display through the registry but this person just
wanted to be able to see which of several drives he was using by naming
it.

I have also noticed behavior on newsgroup posts that would not be
tolerated on responsible forums. I also appreciate that there are forums
that will allow most anything as well. We follow a very clear set of
guidelines, for posting and conduct.

So while I appreciate your preferences I also recognize that you are
pretty much free to make whatever remarks you want to make without
concern for truth. We, on the other hand, would not allow that.

I am sure that this will give rise to more flaming of forums, of me,
etc. But as the saying goes "there are horses for courses." We accept
that, do you?

OK post all you want to the forum but unhook it from the Microsoft
newsgroups. We don't want your trash posts here since you can't follow a
thread or apparently don't care that others also help. I looked at your
forum and your now are their worst spammer by using the posted via...... on
every one of your posts that show on this newsgroup.

In a way. The letters still have to be there, but you can also assign a
name. Unlike the letters, this name can be seen on any computer.

You can do this by formatting your thumb drive.
First, back up the data on the thumb drive onto a computer. This is
important, formatting erases ALL data on the thumb drive.
Then, open My Computer and right click the thumb drive's folder. MAKE SURE
YOU'RE CLICKING THE RIGHT FOLDER!
Select "Format".
Rename the "Volume Label" to anything you want.
Format.
Move all your stuff back on to your thumb drive.
Enjoy!

Victor,
The letters do NOT have to be there - by executing the following
command:

reg ADD HKLM\\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer /v
ShowDriveLettersFirst /t REG_DWORD /d 4

(*NB All of the preceding command should be on one line but may not appear
so here due to line-wrap)

After executing this command either from a Command Prompt or the "Run" box
and then rebooting, will result in the drives that are displayed in explorer
showing NAMES ONLY - no drive letters. Again - I don't know quite why you
might want to display the drive labels only however, that is what the OP
wanted and this is the way to obtain it.
