Insert the thumb drive. Go to

My Computer | Manage | Disk Management

Highlight the thumb drive. Go to

Action | All Tasks | Change Drive Letter/Path

Right click on My Computer and click manage. Under the storage dropdown,
select Disk Management. Right click on the drive you want to change and
click CHange Drive Letter and Path. Select the drive and click change.
Pick your letter in the dropdown box

Hi Mark,

I noticed others provided the correct suggestions and I'd like to provide
following article:

307844 How to change drive letter assignments in Windows XP

Hope this helps.

The others wrote how to do it for one single drive.
If you disconnect it and then assing the letter for
another drive then the assignment for the first drive
is gone. It gets the first availlable letter again...

For a persistent solution you need 3rd party software
like my USB drive letter manager. It handles the
letter assingments in the background.
