What do you guys feel makes a good "kitchen" computer?
has to be small and unassuming.

Is a three piece system still best way to go for
kitchen? Or what abt all in one units?

I'm not a big fan of laptops but haven't ruled em out

What you guys think is best route to go for a kitchen?

laptop........I am sending this from one from my kitchen...or I can take it
to the living room and watch TV at the same time.
I have a desktop setup in an office in the house....but for portability and
small footprint nothing beats a laptop.
Of course it does really depend upon what you aim to do with the machine.

IMHO...

Consider a laptop if you need something portable or are really cramped
for space. Otherwise, you can probably do better in the $/benefit
department with a PC box, keyboard, mouse and monitor. Also, the
kitchen is a great place for a widescreen monitor that has a built-in
TV tuner.

Do you mean in conjunction with a desktop PC above?

In other words... a desktop PC box hooked up to
TV/Monitor in kitchen?

That's not a bad idea the eePC above!

I've actually been looking at one of those as a
supplement to a desktop anyway.... that or the Nokia
N810 tablet

What would you get the eePC or N810?

I was thinking more in terms of doubling a computer monitor as a TV in
case there isn't already a TV in the kitchen.

If yes.... have thought of that as well.

Matter of fact I'm thinking of using a small cheap
Shuttle bare bones box from New Egg for this.

Actually I may do both in time.... TV tuner in desktop
AND monitor with TV tuner in it as well

There may be times all Id want to do is watch some TV
and have the TV itself on only to save power

Don't know about Shuttle - but elected for modular (after considering
proprietary MB/Case setups) when I went that route (over a year ago).
A small but generic mini - lots of 'em on Newegg - that has two DVD
external slots. PS in most generics isn't great - if it has one, plan
on a replacement (better, probably, replaced ahead of time - mine had
one that shortly after crapped out). $60, all in all, for a $30 case/
crap PS - and $30 FORTRON PS replacement. Open-box $30 ASUS mini 478/
MB. Not very big, laying on its side in an entertainment center beside
a CARVER stereo amp. $20 for 512M of DDR. $40 for a retail w/fan
Intel Duron 2.4Ghz. $30 Logitec IR mouse/keyboard across on the coffee
table.

Add the above, right about $150. Discounting - It'd probably have to
be LGA 775 if I had to do it tomorrow.

(Factoring out 500G on two Seagate SATA HDs - a LiteOn SATA DVD burner
- NEC 37" HDTV/LCD 720P - spare Santa Cruz PCI SB overriding MB sound
chipset - and SYBA PCI SATA controller for the LiteOn. No cable
teevee - strictly OTA, though also have a LeadTek SD/Tuner-capture PCI
card installed, for now, crossed out of Device Manager without
drivers. ...Pretty much worthless, everything going ATSC this year)

"mall cheap" isn't always the best way to go. The TV tuner in the PC box is
a great idea, but you may not find one you like that will fit in a small box
with everything else.

I'd also go for a wireless (Bluetooth?) keyboard and mouse so you can move them
around as you work. Get a skin over the keyboard so you can use it with wet
hands.

Are you talking abt laptop above or desktop?

Either one.

I'd get an aux keyboard and mouse for a laptop so the laptop keyboard doesn't
get shorted out with olive oil or cookie dough. An aux monitor would be a
bonus...
