Those little icons next to a site's name

Please forgive my stupidity as I am a new Windows user
(although an older Mac user).

I have IE 6 running under Windows XP on a Gateway portable.

For the past two weeks I would see little icons next to
the names of favorite Web sites. For instance. CNN.Com
would have a little red CNN.

Yesterday, suddenly, all those icons were replaced with
generic IE icons (except for RealPlayer).

I then reinstalled IE, but still can't get the icons back.

While nothing is seriously wrong, it does feel like a
problem has developed and could be a symptom of more
serious problems in my system.

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know how this newsgroup works, so I apologize if
I'm posting wrongly.

Yours,

Sandee

These icons will lost when you empty your Temporary
Internet Files. To keep them permanent you will need this
type of 3rd party software.

UTILITY: FavOrg
Custom icons make the Favorites list easier to scan.
FavOrg, scans the Web sites in your Favorites list for
favicons and makes your favicons persistent.

You may be able to find a free version.
Make sure you scan them before using.

There is nothing wrong. The icons (favicons) are supplied by the web
site.
Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache.
To make them permanent:
FavOrg-PCMag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,14011,00.asp

You may get a download by searching for favorg.zip if you don't want
to pay PC Magazine's library subscription fees but it may not be the
latest version.

Hi Sandee - These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they
normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are
cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with
the stored icons. (It will also verify whether your links in Favorites
are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:

Kelly's Korner has a download which will scan the links for your
Favorites online, find any icons associated with the website, and then
protect them (or any that you add yourself). I'm guessing that you did
some sort of Microsoft update and they were wiped out. FavOrg at Line
108.
