We got the PC back from HP today. All those "problems" were caused by:

A failing HD, failing DVD-RW drive and a failed Floppy Drive. All these
things were replaced and they flashed/updated the BIOS. The feedback paper
also said they re-loaded the "HDD Images."

Free Spirit,
Sounds like your HP had the China Syndrome, a Critical Meltdown. My , how
time flies when you're having fun. Read about all your trivials in the NGs.
I sincerely hope your XP problems are behind you. : })

Hello
Be sure to go to the MS Windows Update site and download all the critical
updates they are for your security and safety.

==================================
That was the FIRST thing I did after installing/updating Norten System
Works. The PC started giving a error message after that though - it went
by too briefly to read before the PC crashed and burned!!!! I mean it
started to re-boot and got caught in an endless cycle of rebooting. I shut
it off for 5 minutes, turned it back on and it would boot. The error would
flash by in seconds and the PC would reboot itself. Blaster worm from the
MS site? I don't think so. I called HP and they saw me through a System
Recovery which wiped out 13 hours of work. Evidently one of those updates
had a serious conflict with something we already installed. ZoneAlarm was
disabled as was Norton when at the MS site for the critical updates.

I'm at a loss......
