I bought the T-Mobil Dash PDA and installed the trial version of Outlook
97 from the supplied CD.

Then I imported data in CSV (DOS) format from another PIM I have been
using for years without incident. ONLY the contact data was imported; I
created additional Task & Calendar listings from within Outlook.

The PDA would:
* synch Calendar & Task data from Outlook just fine
* synch Calendar & Task data TO Outlook just fine.
* synch Calendar & Task edits from either source, just fine

so, at that point, Calendar & Tasks are in good shape.

The PDA:
WOULD
* synch contacts created on the PDA to Outlook
* accept edits on the same data FROM Outlook

WOULD NOT
* accept any of the data originally imported via csv to Outlook from
Outlook (The data generated on the PDA and synched to Outlook remained
accessible / editable / synched in both locations)
* accept fresh data generated IN CONTACTS from Outlook

After > 4 hours (literally) with T-Mobile tech support, it was
determined that the Outlook database had been corrupted during the data
import. That makes it 'broken software' in my mind since several other
PIMs have had no problems with the exact same *.csv data files.

This is the point where tech support (tier 3) told me to have a nice day.

So, thinking to get rid of the data file and start fresh, I control
panel / removed Outlook and re-installed.

No dice ... same data file.

I then deleted the data file folder (with contents), control panel /
removed again and reinstalled again.

Now it is giving me the error message that it cannot find the
Outlook.pst data file. What's up with that?

My thinking is, well, duh ... YOU (Outlook installer) are supposed to
create the stinking thing ... get to it.

Two additional remove / reinstall cycles (and several reboots) later, I
am posting here asking for some guidance as to how to fix this.
Situation. I can't recall ever seeing a situation where a complete
reinstall didn't generate missing files.

I am asking as politely as I know how, but am presently disposed to:
1) find a similar (Dash) device that uses a different OS / has no
dependency on Outlook.
2) if the device wants Linux, wipe Microsoft off this hard-drive and
start fresh
3) If the trial version can not be coerced into working (I am willing to
invest no more than two more hours -- having already chewed through 2
working days with this mess), I am NOT willing to buy the $100+ full
version. Broke in the trial is broke in the full and refunds on software
are too hard to come by. BTDT.

Outlook 97 supplied with a new T-Mobile Dash? That would be a pretty dumb
thing to do since Outlook 97 has been out of production for years and hasn't
been supported for almost that long. With a new machine, you should have
received Outlook 2003 or 2007. By the way, that is NOT a trial version, it
should be a full retail package (I bought an Alltel PPC-6700 [same thing as
the HTC Apache] a year ago and it came with a full, retail copy of Outlook
2003. For the damaged data file, you merely create a new .PST file. With
Outlook 2003, that's 'Control Panel|Mail|Data Files|Add'. As to your bullet
points:

1. Most (if not all) PDAs, regardless of the PDA OS (Windows Mobile, Palm,
etc.) will want to sync with Outlook.
2. You probably won't fine one that will sync with anything on Linux (even
the new IPhone syncs with Outlook through the ITunes interface)
3. Again, you very likely have a full, retail Outlook package, not a trial
version.

You are correct. My bad.

By the way, that is NOT a trial version, it
should be a full retail package (I bought an Alltel PPC-6700 [same thing as
the HTC Apache] a year ago and it came with a full, retail copy of Outlook
2003.

You are wrong. It IS the trial version. I am looking at the words
"Outlook Today - Microsoft Outlook (Trial)" in the header.

help/about reads:

"Microsoft Outlook 2007 Trial (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.4518.1014)"

For the damaged data file, you merely create a new .PST file. With
Outlook 2003, that's 'Control Panel|Mail|Data Files|Add'. As to your bullet
points:

Did that. Copied the data over. Two days ago. Now what?
1. Most (if not all) PDAs, regardless of the PDA OS (Windows Mobile, Palm,
etc.) will want to sync with Outlook.
2. You probably won't fine one that will sync with anything on Linux (even
the new IPhone syncs with Outlook through the ITunes interface)

Not actually all that hard to find:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/multisync/
http://freshmeat.net/projects/coldsync/
http://freshmeat.net/projects/fastsync/

There were others. But it is noted that Multisync will definitely sync
to Opie/Zaurus and the Zaurus is Linux-based: ergo - no Outlook. Outlook
is not the edge of the world. Nothing bad happens when you step off it.

Please, I am asking for help using a Windows program that gives an
essentially useless error code. I'm not squaring off for a Linux /
Windows brawl. But, also, please don't tell me that I have no other
choices. That just isn't true.

If I can run the software I already have loaded on my computer, so much
the better. In fact, far the better. But Windows and Outlook do not
define the edge of the world.
3. Again, you very likely have a full, retail Outlook package, not a trial
version.

"Very likely" is not the same as "certain". Unless "help/about" got it
wrong, it IS a trial version. I'd copy & paste but MSFT has, in their
near-infinite wisdom, chosen to present that information as a graphic
instead of actual text. However, the word "Trial" also appears on the
title bar. I covered this point above, but you covered it twice, so I
figured that I should, too.

I am not a noob. I am an experienced user (starting PC-DOS / MS-DOS 1.x
on a 2-floppy XT with CGA) who is experiencing grief. Googling the error
code brings me no relief. And, so far, Usenet hasn't done any better.

I've read those links and a bunch more besides. Having used / taught
computers since the early days of DOS (not all MSFT products), I feel
certain that something simple is being overlooked here. It doesn't help
that "Support Code: 85010014" is something of a catch-all. You would
think that, with 8 digits to work with, it would pinpoint the problem
with a fair degree of precision, but the closest I can get is that it is
in the Outlook API. There are pages & pages of "try this", no, "try that".

http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918/en-us

are a couple you didn't mention, but that I have read (and tried some of
the tactics from) for the past couple of days. They are somewhat dated,
but so was one of the Microsoft pages.

I have installed / downloaded / un-installed / tweaked / killed data
files, created new ones, repaired-rebooted, repaired-rebooted,
repaired-rebooted 'up to here'. I am willing to spend money to buy the
full version ... actually I have been considering the upgrade to Office
Professional + Accounting to get the integrated client contact /
accounting features (plus, of course, a full copy of Outlook), but
'ixnay on atthey' if I can't get it to handle simple synchronization.

At the moment I have 311 entries in a Contact file imported from a (DOS)
*.csv file. The field mapping worked out for all the fields so it
doesn't appear that there was any problem with the import.

But here's the deal:

New records created in the PDA will not synch.
New records created on the desktop in Outlook will not synch.
Old records imported into the desktop / Outlook from an existing program
will not synch.

Sign me,

Still baffled

To which I might add:
A third-party duplicate remover (Outlook Duplicates Remover Version 5.0)
is easily able to read the Outlook data. It (correctly) removed 3
duplicate entries. So it seems safe to assume that the data file is not
corrupt.

Attempting a repair (control panel \ add / remove \ repair) of Active
Sync threw "Internal Error 2356.ActiveSync.cab". This error repeats
whether from a downloaded copy (digitally signed by Microsoft from their
web site) or from the product CD (T-Mobile Dash).

I used RegClean to eliminate (so nearly as possible) problems arising
from stray registry entries.

Several duplicate entries made directly to the PDA (contacts) were
deleted when synching but a unique entry was left on the PDA. What's up
with that?

At the moment I am deleting Outlook 2007 TRIAL from my computer. I have
already deleted ActiveSync and checked for stray registry entries (there
were none) and I will check for stray entries once Outlook has been
removed and the reboot is complete (What's up with that? I delete a
program that is not running using the provided channel and I have to
reboot?). If I find any, I plan to delete them.

Then I will re-run RegClean one more time for the sake of thoroughness.

After that I will install Office Pro + Accounting TRIAL packages. If
they work, it's a sale. If not ... I'm off to the trash bin to retrieve
the box the Dash came in and on-line looking for a Zaurus. I've already
got the install CD's for Linux.

If anyone has a better answer, now would be a good time to speak up.

Okay ... did that. No dice. The full package is working ... accounting
.... Business Contacts and so on.

ActiveSync will install and remove 3rd party programs from the PDA ...
so I know it can communicate with the PDA.

Outlook seems to have no problems manipulating the data file, adding,
editing and deleting from it.

Both the PDA and Outlook can, independently, retrieve email from Google.
I am running a three-machine / two user network ... there is absolutely
no justification for MS Exchange.

I was able to uninstall Windows Mobile 6 and replace it with a
(slightly) older revision. I know that this is clutching at straws, but
I am trying every avenue I can think of to resolve this problem.

I am not the only person who was able to synchronize one time and one
time only. Another poster reported, as I experienced, that synch worked
fine until the first time the PDA was unplugged and never again.

That's the only solid clue I have ... the unplugging. That and an
"Internal Error: 2356 ActiveSync.cab" when I attempt a repair of
ActiveSync from within [Control Panel / Add or Remove] that says
'something' isn't kosher with ActiveSync.

This is a tech support newsgroup. The only response I've gotten so far
asserted that I didn't know the difference between a trial version and a
full one. That particular respondent was wrong ... but there doesn't
seem to be anyone else reading this list with any more chops than that.

(Before you blast me, let me point out that the MSFT knowledge base
articles are out of date, referencing older versions of Outlook and
ActiveSync. I have tried, over the past 5 days, EVERY suggestion offered
in response to a query on "85010014". The self-repair code in Outlook
and ActiveSync reports no problems. There isn't a workable solution
posted anywhere on the Microsoft web site that considerable searching
can uncover.)

I don't understand it.

I have an unaltered Toshiba standard install of Windows XP Home running
on a modestly equipped Toshiba Satellite laptop trying to synch a top
end PIM to a popular PDA running the current version of Windows Mobile
6. The current version of ActiveSync (by Microsoft) is not on talking
terms with the current version of Outlook (by Microsoft). I'm willing to
spend a sizeable sum to buy into the whole Office behemoth IF I can get
the PDA and Outlook to synchronize, but all I am getting here is
silence. This is essential functionality and I am posting on a
corporate-sponsored newsgroup.

And all I am getting is silence.

Is this how I will be treated -after- I drop a wad on Office Pro +
Accounting?

I agree that the others shipped with the full version ... but T-Mobile /

find a full version of Outlook to download from anywhere else, either.

I've added the Outlook files to the exclusion list for my anti virus. No

Basically, I've done everything suggested on the MSFT support sites and

I helped my stepson set that one up, but it was a loaner from his school
so I can't count it as having been mine. ISTR it came with Pong and
Breakout. And GW Basic, which is why he got the use of it over the summer.

All of which is to say that between us we should be able to resolve this
problem. But instead find ourselves caught up in a whizzing contest.

Okay ... I concede, you win the whizzing contest ... on the condition
that you post an explicit fix for the problem I started this thread with.

My ASLog.txt is appended for your consideration:

1. The people who post here are all volunteers with a personal life that sometimes precludes responding to every single post.

2. If you are looking for Microsoft technical support, Product Support Services will be your best bet. None of us, MVPs included, work for Microsoft.

Milly, If you do not know the answer, don't bother to respond to this
thread ... save your energy for the threads you can help out on. I do
not want to impinge on your precious personal life to resolve my pitiful
software problem. I am not worthy of your attention please don't beat me.

In other words, what makes you think that your time is worth so much
more than mine? You have exactly NO clue what my time is worth but I
promise you that have chewed through a lot of it this week trying to get
this miserable piece of software to perform a simple function.

If Product Support Services had the answers I need, I would not be
posting here.

If T-Mobile tech support (with whom I have spent 6+ hours on the phone)
had a clue, I wouldn't be posting here.

If my first post has net with a technically correct and sufficient
response, I would not be posting here tonight.

Apparently no one seems to understand how these three products interact
well enough to troubleshoot them.

I am a customer with a personal life that does not include setting up
balky hardware / software. When I pay money for a 'pure play' Microsoft
solution, (as Mobile 6 / XP-Home, Outlook & ActiveSync most certainly
are) I quite realistically expect that 'solution' to work with minimal
re-engineering by the end user. The licenses for all of that software
was included in my product price.

The MVPs posting to this newsgroup don't seem to have much in the way of
answers. My earnest hope is that someone who has encountered and
corrected this problem hands-on will post a step by step instuction
guide to how others can correct the problems.

Neither of the MVPs who has posted to this thread has contributed to
solving this problem.

I notice two things from the log file. First, you're running Avast!
antivirus and have the mail scanner module loaded. Try disabling this. I
don't know if it will make any difference to this specific problem, however,
I've personally had the Avast! email scanner cause Outlook problems, plus
email scanning is usually a problem source for all antivirus packages and,
in general, they shouldn't be used.

Second, the link near the bottom references a Microsoft page dealing with
port 990 access through the firewall. I assume you've already checked this,
however.

Another item that may be of help, considering the Windows Installer error
you're seeing, is the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

It would appear that something happened in the ActiveSync install that's now
causing this Windows Installer internal error when you attempt to uninstall
it. I had a similar issue with .Net framework 1.1; it didn't install or run
correctly, wouldn't uninstall, and wouldn't allow the .Net 1.1 SP1 package
to be installed. I used this utility to "uninstall" .Net 1.1 after which it
re-installed properly, ran properly, and also allowed the SP1 package to be
installed after it. I should note that I can also uninstall both without
errors. If the original ActiveSync install went bad somehow, this might
allow you to do a good re-install.

According to

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372835.aspx
Windows Installer Error Messages

"Internal Error: 2356 ActiveSync.cab" means "Could not locate cabinet in
stream". According to another item I found:

http://community.macrovision.com/showthread.php?t=114727
Internal Error 2356. Data1.cab (Please Help!)

"Chris_MS : Q: What would cause Error 2356 Couldn't locate cabinet in
stream: Data1.cab when applying a patch? What types of things should I look
at in my install that might be causing this problem?
Chris_MS : A: This error generally indicates that the specified CAB is not
embedded in the MSI or is not available. The first step would be to verify
that the CAB exists at the specified location and that the patch was created
successfully. You can also get similar
Chris_MS : errors if the sequence numbers of any added or patched files
conflict with an existing media table entry, causing MSI to look in the
wrong cabinet for the file."

As to suggesting you don't know the difference between trial and retail
software, EVERY PDA I've been exposed to has ALWAYS supplied a retail
version of Outlook. This includes the Toshiba e740 I bought in 2002, the
PPC-6700 I now own, Palm Treo 650, 700w, 700p, a number of different IPaqs,
the MotoQ, ALL of them. Why T-Mobile decided to supply you a trial copy is
beyond me, but I'm glad to know about it so I can avoid T-Mobile and suggest
others avoid them as well.

If you still believe "That particular respondent
was wrong...", I'll be more than happy to furnish you with photocopies of a
dozen or more CD labels from my two devices and those of a number of other
folks I know who have PDAs. It's certainly not my fault that T-Mobile
short-changed you.

I agree that the others shipped with the full version ... but T-Mobile /
Dash did not. The behavior of the other devices you have had access to
is, largely, irrelevant to the performance of this Dash. I can't seem to
find a full version of Outlook to download from anywhere else, either.

I've added the Outlook files to the exclusion list for my anti virus. No
help. I've arranged for it to load AFTER all other services. No help.
Basically, I've done everything suggested on the MSFT support sites and
still have no joy.
And by the way, MY first "PC" was a TRS-80 Model I, fully decked out with a
48Kb Expansion Interface and two 35 track, single side, single density, 5
1/4", full width floppy drives.

Hal
I helped my stepson set that one up, but it was a loaner from his school
so I can't count it as having been mine. ISTR it came with Pong and
Breakout. And GW Basic, which is why he got the use of it over the summer.

All of which is to say that between us we should be able to resolve this
problem. But instead find ourselves caught up in a whizzing contest.

Okay ... I concede, you win the whizzing contest ... on the condition
that you post an explicit fix for the problem I started this thread with.

My ASLog.txt is appended for your consideration:

Bill

I notice two things from the log file. First, you're running Avast!
antivirus and have the mail scanner module loaded. Try disabling this. I
don't know if it will make any difference to this specific problem, however,
I've personally had the Avast! email scanner cause Outlook problems, plus
email scanning is usually a problem source forallantivirus packages and,
in general, they shouldn't be used.

I used this utility to "uninstall" .Net 1.1 after whichit
re-installed properly, ran properly, and also allowed the SP1 package tobe
installed after it. I should note that I can also uninstall both without
errors. If the original ActiveSync install went bad somehow, this might
allow you to do a good re-install.

I agree that the others shipped with the full version ... but T-Mobile /
Dash did not. The behavior of the other devices you have had access to
is, largely, irrelevant to the performance of this Dash. I can't seem to
find a full version of Outlook to download from anywhere else, either.
I've added the Outlook files to the exclusion list formyanti virus. No
help. I've arranged for it to load AFTERallother services. No help.
Basically, I've done everything suggested on the MSFT support sites and
still have no joy.
I helpedmystepson set that one up, but it was a loaner from his school
so I can't count it as having been mine. ISTR it came with Pong and
Breakout. And GW Basic, which is why he got the use of it over the summer.
Allof which is to say that between us we should be able to resolve this
problem. But instead find ourselves caught up in a whizzing contest.
Okay ... I concede, you win the whizzing contest ... on the condition
that you post an explicit fix for the problem I started this thread with.

I have been trying to follow this thread for several days now, and
don't shoot the messgenger and hear me out before you start blasting
away at me. Let me first give you my credentials. I am a computer
specialist with the fed agency everyone loves to hate. I've been
doing some type of IS work for 23+ years. I am also a longtime Palm
user going back to the Palm IIIxe. I am on my fourth or fifth Palm.
No end-user should have to spend this kind of time on something so
simple ask syncing their email - contacts, tasks list, or anything
else. It sounds like you have tried everything you and everyone else
can think of.

I have said all this to say, I think you got a lemon. You may have
bad firmware, or it could even be a bad memory module. May I suggest
that before your "exchange or get a refund with no questions asked"
expires, send that bad boy back. I got a crappy 650 from Cingular and
it kept hanging and first one thing then another. Two days before my
grace period was up, I called them up late one night and told them it
was a piece of crap, and I did not want it. They graciously offered
to refund my money, and right there on the spot, set up the shipping
for the 680 - which, I still get some lock ups (probably Documents to
Go and I will get around to uninstalling it one day). The the bottom
line is, as I toldm my kids when they went off to college "burn drop
date in your mind and before that date if things are not working out -
drop it" and get on with your life.

I know this doesn't help you solve your problem but I hope it
encourages you to get rid of this stressor and either have them
replace it with the same model or go to a different model or vendor.
My daughter has the 750 from Cingular (coming from an HP something or
other [traitor]. I have another daughter who has the 6 something or
other from Verizon. Both of them love them as much as I love my 680.
The software I love the most - Outlook Mail, Calendar, Contacts,
Tasks, Money (Palm is 3rd party software) and Splashshopper. All MS
products except one and they all sync seamlessly from day one and have
been working troublefree for 8 months and I expect them to continue to
do so.

Good luck.
