I need to re-install xp professional because of problems. When I try to reinstall I get this message that "This version of windows xp cannot be upgraded. The option to upgrade will not be available." So this means that I would have to do a full install and lose all of my settings and some data. Is there any way to force it to do a up-grade or can I safely do a reinstall over windows and not lose my data?

Please help
Thank you

There is no further upgrade option from XP Pro. Do you have a retail XP
disk? If so you can do a repair install and retain setting and files. If you
don't , your only option will be to format and reinstall. Most manufacture
disk do not include the repair option , (reinstall over present install) .

You may be able to perform a repair install. You will have to go to MS
updates afterward and may need to re-set some of your personal settings.
Follow the instructions on the following site.

It seems that you have an O.E.M. version of Windows XP, meant for
installation on a computer w/o an operating system. They will only allow a
clean install on a hard drive without any system.
