This this REALLY from Microsoft?

A brief summary of a notice I started getting today, and
wonder if it is legitimate:

"Microsoft Explorer has encountered a problem. Send error
report to Microsoft".

I have not send the report.

Thanks for any opinions.

There IS a new feature that MS is using with Windows XP
that when an application crashes, they offer to send a
bug report back "home" so they can track bugs. I do not
know if folks have learned to hijack this tool or not,
but I would be very surprised if someone hadn't tried by
now to spoof the unsuspecting with a cheap imitation.

If your application really did crash, it was probably
legitimate.

However, maybe to be safe, you should NOT send this time,
and watch it closely.

One way you can test this is to make an app hang (give it
a HUGE task) and then force it to close with task
manager, and when the app (busy because of all the work
you gave it) doesn't respond, you'll be prompted to close
the app forcibly. When you do, you'll also get this
prompt. Or you should.

If all else fails, and you just don't trust it, don't
send. I send if I think sending would help them, but I
don't send if I feel that my own stupidity caused the
crash to begin with.

Using Win 98 2nd Ed, I.E. 6.00.2800.1106, using latest
update of anti-virus program, not using Outlook Expressfor

Either reading Census or using Search.

Are you up-to-date at Windows Update, Jean? If so, a hijacker is the most
likely culprit.

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis: Post your files to the
forum mentioned on the above page.

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/cwshredder.zip
(Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder before each use. It's updated
frequently.)

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on do both once-a-day.
