It all depends on the policy and settings of the mail service provider.
You'll need to contact yours to find out.

Since you are not downloading the messages but instead leaving them on the
server, that would depend on the server operator. If the server belongs to
your ISP, then you need to contact your ISP to see what limits they have
placed on your mailbox.

According to http://www.virgin.net/customers/helpme/email/service.html#h,
Virgin.net has a 10 MB limit of storage space for e-mail on the primary
account and 5 MB storage on any additional e-mail addresses.

Your mailbox is at your ISP's site, and how much space he gives
you is up to him. It's different for different ISPs. Some (mine,
for example) don't restrict you at all in this regard). So you
need to ask your ISP.

By the way, when a restriction is in effect, it's normally on the
total size of the messages, not their number. So you can keep
more small messages than big ones.
