I have problems. Microsoft sent me to this newsgroup to get answers. I've
posted twice with different questions and both times no response. So I guess
it's MICROSOFT that SUCKS too!

Here is my last question:

I cannot get the latest Windows 2000 upgrades. My PC hangs at a certain
point and nobody on this newsgroup gave me a fix.

So, can I reinstall Windows 2000 using my CD and NOT lose anything?

I don't want a new Administrator on my computer. I want to keep everything
exactly as it is except I'll have the original Windows 2000. Then I can try
to upgrade and get the latest patches.

Dennis,

If you boot into the current operating system, and do an upgrade in place,
you will not lose data nor user accounts.

If you boot the machine to the CD and attempt a reinstall, you may lose
software settings and user accounts.

I'm afraid I can't help you much with your Windows Update problems; that's
an area I'm not very familiar with. Have you looked through the
troubleshooters on the Windows Update site? Click "Get Help and Support" in
the left hand sidebar and review the tips and troubleshooter there.

Thanks Matt,

Can I reinstall when I boot from the machine? You said upgrade. I cannot
upgrade, that's my problem. My PC hangs at a certain point.

Dennis

Dennis,

Where in the upgrade process does it hang?

And then, after I have to cancel, it says

"Please wait while the current installation completes"

and of course that screen never goes away until I close it. The installation
does not complete.

Running SP4 locally or from a LAN share is definitley a better idea than
pulling from Windows Update with the express installer. If you are working
on a dial-up connection, you're in for a very long wait. The full package is
about 130 megs, even though the express installer is only a few hundred K.
This may be what you are thinking is a hang (huge file, slow connection,
even slower server). If you know someone with a TechNet subscription, borrow
their CD (I think it came in either the July or August issue).
