cannot find the file "c:\desktop\new master inventory.xls'
(or one of its components). Make sure the path and
filename are correct and that all required librairies are
available.

Maybe one of these will help.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

I did the second option you mentioned 1st and it fixed the
problem. however, I thought it wouldn't hurt to do the
1st option and reset the registry to its factor settings
so I wouldn't see this problem again. to my
disappointment the problem got worse and it gave me three
errors when I tried to open the files from the desktop.
the errors were

cannot find the file "c:\desktop\new master inventory.xls'
cannot find the file "c:\desktop\master.xls'
cannot find the file "c:\desktop\inventory.xls'

I can still open the files if I open it through excel. I
also found I can open the files from the desktop if I
rename the file with no spaces in the file name. However,
I still can not open an excel file emailed to me from
Outlook. I have to save it 1st.

I would also like to be able to save excel files with
spaces in the future.

I am running win 95 and excel 97. thanks

I'd try the registry stuff once more (both /unregserver and /regserver).

then make sure that the check mark is missing.

If that fails, here's a link that Ken Macksey posted that worked for him:
http://google.com/groups?threadm=#F#[email protected]

(But later he came back and posted that when he did /unregserver followed by
/regserver, it worked ok.)

By the way, I've done a few /unregserver and /regserver just to play around and
they've never caused that problem with me (win98 and xl97 & xl2002).

So except for it not working, I don't think you did anything really wrong. (Now
that didn't help much, huh?)
