This is probably an impossibility - but I thought I'd ask anyway!

I connect to the Internet using ADSL, and I have need to set up faxing. The
problem is the situation of my system. It's in the study, and the phone
point is in the hall, therefore it makes things slightly trickier.
Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, I cannot afford to replace the
crappy Speedtouch USB modem that was provided by my ISP. The diagram below
attempts to illustrate the way it's all set up.


WJ (wall jack)
Fn (filter number)
----- extension cable
~~~~~ USB cable to back of PC
----- extension
phone cable to study
WJ |F1(phone /extension
cable )------------------------------------------------F2 (modem

Does that make sense? Basically:- Filter 1 plugs into wall jack and has the
cable and the DSL modem. Cable runs along hall and under desk to PC in
study. In the study end of cable I have a second filter with the modem
plugged into it.

Considering the above scenario, is there any way I can set up faxing? If
yes, how? If no, unless I purchased additional equipment, what extra
equipment would I be required to purchase?

I don't entirely follow your description, but it's perhaps because I've never
used DSL filters (I have a dedicated DSL line). The bottom line is this:
Assuming that your DSL service is working properly, take the wire that's
plugged into your regular modem and connect it instead to a regular telephone.
If you can make a telephone call from that phone you will be able to fax
(assuming, of course, that you have a fax modem that's "made for XP").

If I've misunderstood, and you only have one wire and need BOTH filters in the
path between the wall and the DSL "modem," then what you'll need is a
"splitter" (about$US6 see, e.g.,
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog_name=CTLG&product_id=279-602).
Something like this:

Wall --> Splitter --> F1 ----> F2 --> DSL "modem" --USB--> PC USB connection
|
--------------------------------------------------> PC fax
modem connection
 
And, most important, what has this to do with XP? That should cover most of
your stock answers.
