I just re-installed Windows 2000 to get rid of a nasty virus and adware
situation. That's gone, but whenever I access a web page I keep getting
this annoying pop-up message asking me if I want to allow Active-X
plug-ins and software to run. I can answer yes or no, and five seconds
later get the same message. Does anybody know how to stop this message
from running wild?

Funny, I NEVER get that message when I use the Firefox browser ;-D

Consider the risk of ActiveX controls getting into mischief. When you
NEED to use IE you may want to allow ActiveX content ONLY from TRUSTED
and FAMILIAR sites to run without those "annoying" prompts. You can add
ONLY those FEW sites to the "Trusted sites" web content zone in Internet
Express. If that leads you to avoid those sites that need the ActiveX
controls, THAT'S THEIR PROBLEM! (Complain to the site operators too!)

NEVER click links in emails to access sites like banks, investment
brokers, payment escrow sites like Pay Pal or on-line bill pay sites
like many utilities and insurance companies operate!!! Such links COULD
modify your computer's settings to permit impostor sites to steal from
you EVEN when your browser's address bar shows the proper URL!

STRONG recommendation you set "Administrator approved" "Disable" or
"Prompt for most of the "ActiveX controls and plug ins" settings for the
"Internet" web content zone. Probably better to use "Administrator
approved" or "Disable" with any of your OS's limited accounts if the
system is to be used by children and any adults who lack significant
security awareness.

Try this (but be CAREFUL!):

Tools Menu

Security Tab

Select a content Zone

Click "Custom Level" button

Change settings under "ActiveX controls and plug ins"

If Mozilla had just the one thng I like about IE5- IE6, I'd switch; but
Mozilla doesn't save it's files in one big file like IE6 does when you
use the .mht type of save. I can understand that Firefox doesn't want
to be accused of copying Internet Explorerer but I find their save
feature to be rather clumsy and awkward in comparison to IE's .mht save
feature. But that's just my preference... :-)
