"This is a mailing address" how's it work

What happens when I check "This is a mailing address"; should it
somehow create an address for an envelope in Word?

No. It designates which address will be used as the mailing address when you
do a mail merge or create an envelope from Word.
 
"snip" designates which address will be used as the mailing address when you

I thought there was a connection with Word; but how do I find the
addresses stored in Outlook when I create an envlope in Word?

The Inset Address Button in Word brings up your Outlook Address Book.
