This is a long shot, but someone might know something AIPTEK PenCam

About 18 months ago my sister bought what I reckon is a PenCam Trio. Because
she couldn't get it to work, she gave it to me. I have been searching the
net trying to find out more information about it. I've visited both AIPTEK
sites (one in the States and one in Germany) and they insist that all
cameras have a USB interface - this has *NOT* got a USB interface, and I
cannot figure out what it is. It isn't FireWire (this was bought in the days
before FW really existed), and I cannot really describe it without
attempting to scan it, and obviously I wouldn't post a binary here. I know
it's a crappy little thing, but it might be fun to see if I can get it
working (I'm saving up for a Canon PowerShot, but this might be good enough
for web viewing). The only way I can describe the connector (and this
probably isn't at all helpful, but I'm doing my best!) is that it looks like
a smaller version of the charger connector on my ancient Panasonic mobile
phone.

----__----

That really isn't a very good representation, but it's the best I can do
(I'm not very good at ASCII drawing!)

Can someone tell me what sort of connector it might conceivably be? If
anyone wants to look at a scan, then give me your email address.

Thanks folks!

Is that connector on the cam ? If so then it probably is and you need the
cable that will go from the cam to a USB plug. Many usb devices have their
own type of jack on the device and you need the specific cable to go from
the device to the computer's usb port.

It could easily be a USB interface, but they used a proprietary
connector on the camera which needs their proprietary cable (with a
standard USB male plug on the other end). SInce the cam is only 18
months old and they claim it's USB, I'd assume that's really what it
is. This is assuming you found info on that same model... if it's a
really old model not even on the 'site I suppose it could be serial
but I don't think many serial cameras were still in the market 18
months ago.

What you might do is take a continuity meter to the larger outer
contacts, see which one is a ground (relative to another ground in
battery compartment). Once you have determined the ground you need
source the connector and modify a standard USB cable, trying with
data+ and data- in one config, but if that doesn't work, swap the
data+ and data-... just be sure you have the positive and negative for
the USB correct to avoid damage.

Why not ask your sister for the cable that came with the camera????

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.
