I was previously using the Thermaltake TR2-M2 (less expensive Aeroflow
clone):

http://www.tr2tt.com/English/Products/coolers/m2.htm

Temps (usually around 45C) and db level were acceptable with the above, but
once I caught wind of the new Thermaltake "Silent Boost" specs........

http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/silentBoost.htm

........I was determined to get my hands on one and try it. Cost me $30, but
IMO, it's well worth it. Temps have now dropped an average of 10 degrees
(usually around 32-36C). I have yet to see the temps reach 40C in my
non-air conditioned office. Best part of all is that it's also much quieter.

Other current (but everchanging) relevant system specs:

A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 3000+ 400 FSB
Raptor SATA HD
Round IDE & Floppy cables
Antec SX630II Mid-tower
Vantec Stealth rear mounted case fan

I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking for high performance cooler with a
low noise level.

I see in the specs the mention of "hydro wave bearing", and I already
knew Panasonic has a fan in this design, so my quesiton is, is this a
Panaflo fan that comes with it or a knockoff/clone brand?

In the past Thermaltake used some mid-to-low quality fans, but if
they're now switching to high-end fans it can only be a positive
thing.

That's a good question. Prompted me to do a quick Google search,
which only came up with a few sites written in German (translated to
English via Google) that claim it does in fact use the Panaflo. Not
sure how reliable these sites are, though:

Same info posted here (at almost the bottom of the web page):

My guess is that Panasonic (Matsushita) has a patent on the Hydro Wave
Bearing and wouldn't let others use the name. Therefore, the fan must be a
Panoflow, or a company they licenced the HWB to.

I really like that motherboard so far. I got a refurb and so far no
problems........well , I did have one with the Maxtor controller card
but now things are running well. No freeze up hassles. Ive been
transferring things back and forth to test it. No hangs like on my
ABIT - using all the same components. The Abit usually hangs at
random but especially after doing intensive hard disk stuff.

I love it! I haven't had a single problem with this board since day one.
Actually has the potential to see it's first birthday, which would be
unusual for me considering my weakness to fight off the urge to buy just
about every new board that comes out.

I can take or leave ABIT. Loved my old BH6, but decided to get rid of my
IS7 almost as fast as I bought it.

Raptor SATA HD
how many points you get with Sandra Disk bench?

I just did the file system benchmark and it reported 25919 kb/s.
(just curious) & how loud that 10kRpm spin is comparing to some other
drive?

I was very hesitant to purchase the Raptor after reading some complaints in
the reviews about a high pitched noise due to the 10K spin. Like anyone
else, the last thing I really want is more noise. I decided to take the
chance anyway...and to be honest, I really don't know what the hell these
people are talking about. My Antec case sits on top of my desk near the
monitor, and to me, the drive doesn't sound that much different than a WD
7200RPM.

I agree, I have one of the 10k WD SATA raptor hard drives and I hear no
whine. It is pretty darn quiet if you ask me. My whole system is pretty
darn quiet. A very good drive I think. The reviews were pretty much
stating it is a good, not very good, and not very bad drive. I give it
some good ratings.

LOL. If you were in New Zealand I'd be emailing you about now to make an
arrangement to buy your 'old' boards off you when you get the upgrade urge.
I'm in the unenviable financial position of having to make do with mainly
second-hand components for the four computers my partner and I run on our
home LAN.

I've had multiple drives of exact same make/model in the past and
noticed that some were significantly more whiney than others. I read
somewhere that the shipping and handling of the drive can cause this,
but I didn't handle the drives roughly myself and it's kind of hard to
know what "happened" to the drives before they arrived. The whiney
drives have since been sold off but AFAIK they still work fine (I'm
almost sure of it) so they were just a lot louder.

I have that board too, it's the best I've ever had. Although my first one
was more or less death on arrival, I got a replacement under warranty and
the system has been running without any problems for months now. I run Win
XP Pro SP1 on it and only reboot it when changing hardware or drivers or
other things that require it (I do use hibernate though) While the board
isn't expensive, you get 2 onboard NIC's (nVidia and 3com), SATA-RAID,
onboard nVidia Soundstorm 5.1 sound, 6xUSB2, Firewire, Dualchannel DDR, AGP
Pro 8x, etc.

I am using an Athlon XP2600+ (166 FSB) processor on it with 512MB PC2700 RAM
(one
stick, will add one when I have use for it to go to dual channel), Geforce
4TI4200-based graphics card and WD 120GB 8MB cache HD.

Only thing is that you apparently have to keep the memory and FSB
synchronized to maintain stability.

Yeah it has everything on it. Ive never had a board with so much stuff
on it except for video and I wouldnt want that anyway unless it was a
budget system I was building.

The only problem Im having right now is I get a bit of sluggishness in
response with the Maxtor Controller card in my system. Not sure why.
I dont get this with the built in controllers. Ive seen posts where
they say they are getting fine performance with the maxtor card.

You know it feels funny - the way the mouse cursor moves and the way
there are micro hesitations all the time when the disk is accessed.
Its annoying - not really a big problem but its bugging me.
