I am looking for a free application that will let me define with ease and in
an exact manner what icons will be displayed for each file type.

I know that there is iconpackager from stardock that can do this very
well...
but I am looking for a free utility.

I know that there is folder options> file types,
but this is CRUDE and does not work correctly always...

thanks in advance

I use IconJack32 to extract icons from .exe and .dll files. Sometimes,
I'm also able to extract them from other file-types by copying the file
and changing the extension on the copy to .dll.

I use IconEdit32 to create and change icons. This allows you to create
icon sets: the same icon in 256 and 16 colors and black and white;
48x48, 32x32, and 16x16 pixels. You can have all 9 variations or any
subset. Since icons look different at different resolutions and in
different color sets, you can edit each of the 9 separately. Also, I
have been able to copy images with the correct pixel size that are open
in Photo Editor and paste them into IconEdit32 to create icons.

I got both from PC Magazine at <http://http://downloads.zdnet.com/>
several years ago as freeware. They do work with WinXp. If they're no
longer available there, I can send you the installer files; each is
under 0.6 MB.

On the contrary...I am flattered. You took my advice: You found it by
searching for it. And because you shared the link it's now available to
anyone else who searches newsgroups looking for the same thing.

I did not find it be searching for it...
I was told in another newsgroup by someone
who knows how to use newsgroups.

I know more applications than you can imagine...
if I dont know something, it means that through the years
of searching for things I have not stumbled upon an application like this.

u can jst crack iconpackager its soooo easy to STEALsoftware i love it it
hurts software companies STINKING, they lose out on money its a beautiful
jesus u can hack jst about anything,

Yes but stardock iconpackager loads some dlls with windows, and I am trying
to avoid having too many things loading with windows...
I need to have my shell lean as can be. This can clearly be done nativly
without needing an extra software.
