I find it incredible that there is no monitor or web
master on this page to advise the thousands of people who
have ALL had the same problem since 10 August, ie. TRYING
TO dowload the famous or infamous "patch" due to the fact
the 'puters keep crashing before anyone can reach the
bloody patch.
Everyone is asking the same question "what is going on"
and there is nobody there to answer.

The only help seemed to be to go to a computer not
infected, download the patch on a floppy, bring that home
and download it - brilliant.

Incredible!! I could not even get through by telephone or
email. In the end, at 1am my time, I went through to an
Australian web site and downloaded the patch from there.
at MSN.aus or MSN.nz.

HEY!! MSN! HOWS ABOUT A REAL LIVE ONLINE MONITOR OR WEB
MASTER ON LINE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION IN A TIMELY MANNER
INSTEAD OF LETTING US ALL FLAIL ABOUT ASKING EACH OTHER
THE SAME QUESTION OVER AND OVER AGAIN - "HOW TO FIX THIS
LATEST PROBLEM??????" (dream on)

If you read replies to the repeated posts, you'll see there are plenty of
people volunteering help...

See http://www.visualante.org/msblast/main.htm for lots of good
info....and/or follow the instructions below.

If you can't stop your computer from restarting:

As soon as your computer reboots and Windows loads, click Start, then Run.
In the box, type the following:

shutdown -a (then click OK)

The only thing I now works is from J. Levy who recommends
going to symantec.com (the norton utilities people) and
download their solution. Myself, I had no problem with
the microsoft download. Give symantec a look.

I was infected by the blaster worm and I have religiously
downloaded every MS update that my computer reminder said
to. And after I would download the patch, I would be
reminded the next day to download the same patches even
though when I first downloaded them the window came up
saying that updates had been installed. I checked my
encryption services to be on too. There is something wrong
with either my computer or the MS update site. In fact, I
wonder if the update site is where I picked up the worm in
the first place. (I posted a message here a week before
the worm appeared on 8/11 asking why I was continually
getting update reminders to download updates that I had
already downloaded and installed, but got no answers. I
think it is pretty sorry of Microsoft to sell defective
software and then back it up with defective patches.>-----

You are quite incorrect. Had you bothered to actually peruse this
newsgroup, you'd see how very wrong you are.

The patches were not defective. They worked fine for many people, myself
included. I maintain about a dozen PCs and NOT ONE had a problem.

It goes beyond simply downloading patches: it is incumbent upon YOU, the
OWNER, to diligently maintain your expensive piece of equipment, ensure it
is kept up to date in ALL aspects (such as drivers) and avoid installing
software known to cause problems (such as Kazaa, Gator, et al). This is not
a toaster we are talking about. It is not a hair drier. It is a complex
piece of electromechanical equipment that is sensitive to all sorts of
environmental bugaboos. It requires you, the user, educating yourself on
the pitfalls of PC ownership.

You need the patch anyway. The Symantec tool removes a specific variant of
the worm, but there are many anyway, and without a firewall and the patch
your computer is still vulnerable.

The patches themselves are not defective, but there are occasionally
problems with windows update on some people's computers. You can see what
was installed by checking in Add/Remove programs. You can also patch
manually.

See if this fixes the cryptographic services error:

See if http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html helps.
