This happened two days ago and since then I get the message on opening my
computer. I click OK and it brings me to the wallpaper but there are no
icons and nothing more happens. I have no disc, Compaq stores such things in
a Cab file I understand. I am not very experienced with this sort of thing
and would appreciate any assistance you could give me.

You could try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete (Windows Task Manager) and then
choose File-->New Task (Run...)
In the Open: field (Create New Task dialog), type--> appwiz.cpl <--(this
runs Add/Remove Programs)

Another alternative would be running--> sfc /scannow <--(System File
Checker) first, -BUT- you would likely need to pop in a CD or be able to
point to a "source" location for that file and possibly others, to be
restored.

Finally, another consideration would be trying a System Restore. You could
try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete (Windows Task Manager) and then choose
File-->New Task (Run...)

Run--> %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
-or-
Run--> MSCONFIG-->then on General tab-->Click on <LAUNCH SYSTEM RESTORE>
Choose most recent date from before this mess and let Windows try to go back
in time.

Brent you are being very patient with me, but I would need it to get on the
internet wouldn't I? How would I down load a new copy if I cannot access the
net?

LOL No problem Leslie. Be default Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer 6.
Having IE 7 or 8 on your computer are just upgrades. So removing IE 7 should
set you back to IE 6, and hopefully that will solve the problem and put you
in a position to use your computer. If everything works out well, I would
recommend installing Mozilla Firefox or Opera. Both can be downloaded from
www.download.com. Hope this helps.

OK, I have followed all of your instructions to no avail. Perhaps it is that
I am a Grandmother and this is all muck to me. But having said that I really
would like to fix this.

Indeed that DLL seems is related to Windows Internet Explorer (IE).
Perhaps some installation or upgrade in that area has gone awry.

What is your recent history with IE in the last two days? What
happened between when things worked and when it quit working?
Updates, upgrade, new installs, hmmmm?

See if CTRL+ALT+DEL will get you into Task Manager, then click File,
New Task and enter:

c:\windows\explorer.exe

Click OK to see if you can get control of your desktop back.

You can then check in the c:\windows\system32 folder (where
normaliz.dll should be) for your missing DLL. Can you copy one over
from another working system using a USB flash drive or floppy?
SOMETIMES that will work and it is easy and may work for you. The
first thing is to try to get your desktop working so you can
maneuver.

Usually, Add/Remove programs lists IE7, but doesn't have an uninstall
button (on purpose) - it is removed another way. You will probably
not be able to delete IE7 from there, but you can look.

A System Restore is not likely to replace a DLL that has been deleted.

Get your desktop back first.

See how far that gets you.
