Can someone recommend a reliable (and preferably free) third party back-up
software, which can do a back-up according to a set schedule and in the
background? I tried Memeo's backup software, but it is just a lousy product

What's wrong with Vista's backup system?

Nothing "wrong" per se; but I was wondering whether there is any better tool
available for the purpose.

Personally - I highly recommend the investment in a Seagate Replica external
500GB drive. For about $100 U.S. and you can backup multiple machines -
completely and without much of any effort on your part. It can
backup/restore versions of files or a completely restore a system from
scratch.

Macrium Reflect ?

You can look at Comodo Backup. It is free and has two the two bit
versions (32 or 64.)

It can do a file copy or a proprietary backup file.

Mozy worked OK when I tested it a while back. The first 2 GB are free. The
one major security issue I found was that anyone with an account on the
computer could view my backed up files. I had e-mailed Mozy about that and
basically that was just the way the program worked. I didn't use it long
enough to find any other issues, and they might have fixed the issue I found
by now. At least it's free to try, so it wouldn't hurt.

Cobian Backup. It's completely free and can copy open/blocked files too.
