thinking of dropping NOD32

Hi

I've been using NOD32 for a while, and still have version 2.7 on my computer
because there seem to have been so many problems with the "new" version 3,
even after it's latest updates. But there is the risk that they will stop
allowing updates of sig files to my version so I'm starting to look at
alternatives.

One of the things I don't like the sound of with the new version of NOD32 is
that it uses a proxy server. This is a totally uninformed, gut reaction, but
I like things clean and simple.

So - of the other contenders out there, like kaspersky, are there any that
don't use proxy servers.

I'm using version 3.0.560.0 here with absolutley no problems. If others
have reported problems, then all I can say is there has probably never been
a computer application which has never caused anyone a problem. But they
are run on many different combinations of hardware and software so really
not so amazing. No version of NOD32 has ever caused me a problem.

Having said that, I won't knock Kaspersky which is excellent too. I run
that on another machine, so I feel well able to judge.

Both are excellent choices.

The official support forum has loads of posts about loads of problems, but
ESET seem to be trying to work on them, and I'd be quite happy to hang on
until they got it all sorted, but as I said, I don't like the idea of them
having completely changed the approach to where they now use a proxy
server - especially since I gather they they give no warning or ask
permission that they are going to change settings on your computer when you
install. So does Kaspersky use a proxy server?

KAV (7.0) gives you the option of using or not using a proxy server in
settings. It's by default set to use a proxy server so I have always left it
on. I only just now tried it turned off and the program updated fine so I
guess it's not necessary.
 
You are using an out of date version, we are now up to v3.0.621.0

There are people reporting problems but that's the same with any new
software when it has a major upgrade, it doesn't distract from the fact that
NOD32 is a very good AV and Eset are working very quickly to iron out all
the niggles.

Thanks, I'm aware my version is out of date - but please note that as in my
original post, what I'm not happy to accept is NOD32 changing to using proxy
servers - and the new version installing without telling the user it is
going to change settings.

I have never opted to use a proxy server with either application, although
you can opt to do so. And I've just re-checked my copy of NOD32. I'll check
Kaspersky later. Everything works correctly for both of them, so I fail to
understand why proxies should be required.

I installed that just a few weeks ago, when advised of its availability by
Eset. They've always done so in the past too, so I think I'll just keep
waiting for the call. Definition updates arrive frequently and regularly
(sometimes hourly), so what's the rush?

I just checked my NOD32 and it is version 3.0566.0 - how
does one update to the newer version - will it do it
automatically? My virus signatures are up to date and I
don't see a way to update the program itself.

I'm running Nod32 3.0.621.0 and I haven't got a proxy server and
that's why I don't have proxy server set up on my copy of Nod32. Runs
just fine.

i'm running v3.0.621, and turned on the advanced mode, went to the set-
up tab, went into advanced set-up, and there's a box that you can check
"if you want to go through a proxy".

i don't so i didn't check the box.

If you don't want to have any traffic routed via the local proxy (ekrn.exe),
you can disable application content filtering or at least limit it to
selected applications or HTTP/POP3 ports.

You may use another proxy on your system, but it is independent of the above
and that's the setting you have selected in the "Advanced Mode".

To my knowledge, you can not run Nod32, version 3.x without their proxy.

To see evidence of it, you will need to use something like TCPView:

Use it to watch the running processes that open ports on your machine. Any
time you open up ports for http, pop or smtp traffic, you will see double
connections opening up. One is from the original application (IE, OE,
Firefox, etc) using the loopback address (127.0.0.1) and the other is for
ekrn.exe with the actual local and remote IP addresses. NOD32 v3 uses
ekrn.exe as a proxy server to filter http and email traffic.

This has nothing to do with the proxy server settings that some have found
in NOD32's configuration settings. Those settings are in case your system
already uses another proxy server to access the net.

As far as my own $0.02 worth, any uproar over using this particular method
of filtering traffic over some other, is pretty pointless. Whether they use
a proxy server set up to intercept the traffic for filtering, or patch into
the traffic at a different layer/place for filtering, is inconsequential.
The only things that are important are the effectiveness of the filtering
and how small an impact there is on the rest of the system.
 
Do you see ekrn.exe in running tasks/processes? That is the proxy and if you
are running Nod32, version 3.x then you are using the proxy.

I went and saw that ekrn.exe is running in the tasks list.
Admittedly, I know very little about such stuff. Is running through a
proxy good or bad and what are the advantages/disadvantages of doing
so?

The issue isn't so much a matter of "good or bad", but different.

The main aims are; continous, non-blocking downloads and smooth scanning of
dynamic and password protected HTTP traffic.

Many anti-virus programs now include a "proxy mail servier" which inserts
itself between your email program and mail server and pretends to be a mail
server. Instead of your mail program talking directly to the mail server, it
talks to your anti-virus program and the anti-virus program acts as a middle
man.

The most common problem is when (for whatever reason) the anti-virus proxy
server fails to respond to a request. Depending on the anti-virus program
being used, this could cause error messages such as "the server 127.0.0.1
could not be found" or "the server is not responding".

It appears that most/all anti-virus programs will be using a proxy at
sometime in the future.
