Things that DON'T fix lost Search Files/Folders capability...

J

J. K. Smith

I posted once before here that all of a sudden, when I try START/SEARCH
files or folders, nothing at all happens. (A friend's machine now has
the same problem -- maybe we infected each other?). Here's a list of
things that don't help.

1) Reinstall SP4 without reinstalling Win2K
1) Reinstall Win2K
3) Reinstall Win2K and SP4

I've tried a lot of other search schemes and none of them are as simple
and useful as the built in SEARCH was.

Would appreciate any hints on what would fix this.

Maybe this will help...

A couple of online virus scans

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also to repair System Files do this...

Start
Run...
"type" CMD /k <enter>
"type" SFC /SCANNOW <enter>
(may need the OS CD)

also to run CheckDisk

Start
Run...
"type" CMD /k <enter>
"type" CHKDSK /R
"type" "Y" for yes <enter> and reboot
(this will take up to 30 minutes)

if this does not fix your malady, you can perform an Inplace Upgrade

Windows 2000 In-Place Upgrade

*Check your CD-ROM for bootability
(The very beginning of booting up is called POSTING)
Note: During posting, Ctrl+Alt(hold)& Delete(tap) can be used to start over.

the bootup sequence. If not, use the four bootup floppies that came with system. If
you do not have any, regular format 4 floppies with NT computer, and notice that the
bad sectors are zero. The files at www.bootdisk.com. Mark your floppies 1/4, etc. so
the order doesn't get mixed up.

2. Choose "Set up Windows 2000 now" (not repair)
3. (When prompted)Insert Installation CD
4. Press Enter
5. Press F8 to agree with EULA(end user license agreement)
6. Press "R" for REPAIR.
7. Press Enter (Remove last floppy) to copy files from CD

Note: This will reset passwords and reset user passwords to "blank". You should set
the Administrator password, and one more administrator account for an alternate in
case the primary account fails. These should be strong passwords (10 or more
alphanumeric characters). This also rolls back you Service Packs and Hot Patches in
OS, and in Internet Explorer. Look in your Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel).

Any chance you guys both used TweakUi? There is an option in there to
disable search results. Make sure you didn't disable it.

Never used TweakUI -- but thanks for the idea.

John thanks. All I found there was NoDriveTypeAutorun. So I guess that
isn't it. Thanks again.

Hmmmm... Stupid question but I suppose shortcut keys don't work either?
(Winkey+F, or F3 when in Explorer) What about error messages?
Anything showing in the Event Viewer?

Is this in your registry:

===============================================================================
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{1f4de370-d627-11d1-ba4f-00a0c91eedba}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}]

You can merge it if not there. (I know the Recycle Bin thing has
nothing to do with it, I just exported the whole key).

I wonder if this isn't caused by that "cracked like five thousand year
old pottery" Internet Explorer?

John, shortcut keys don't work and I can't seem to find an Event Viewer.
Where is that found?

Thank you sir. I made a shortcut to this Event Viewer (I remember it
from the old NT somewhere...).

Anyhow, When trying START/Search/Files&Folders nothing at all happens --
and nothing ends up in the event viewer either.

Regards
