First of all, don't try this if you cannot stand sudden shocks, rapid
increases of blood pressure or are suffering a mild, yet throbbing
hangover.
After manually setting my memory speed to 400 in the BIOs and
upgrading said BIOs to 1016 to fix a recurring 'disk not found'
problem at boot up (previous version was 1006). I discovered the bios
menu and noticed a setting under the jumper free setting called
'Turbo'. While the manual clearly states that it 'could' make the
system unstable, I none the less decided, 'what the heck', I could do
with a performance boost. This came after I had set my memory timings
manually and began to experience strange 'hangs' with IE6. Related?
Dunno, but the weren't happening prior to the memory 'adjustment'.
Anyway, I changed the setting to 'Turbo', hit F10 and......
Nothing! Screen went into power saving mode, machine was totally dead
(albeit for a flickering of lights from the front of my box) and my
heart stopped. I believe in the next few minutes I was clinically
dead. My heart had stopped after all and that mild hangover suddenly
kicked itself into 'Turbo'. I tried restating the machine four times,
nada, nix, nein, njet, nothing.... I remembered all those times I
swore I would do a full back up of my system, tomorrow. All the files
and address gone. Sniff and oh F**K.
I waited five minutes and re booted (again), praying silently to the
great silicon God and got a boot up. I quickly changed all settings
back to their former glories and that was that.
Moral of the story?
IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!
