i am trying to network a 2000pro machine and a 98 machine.
i understand the 98 machine wont be able to get into the
2000 machine buti cant get it to go the other way either.
they are both plugged into a hub, set up to share, in the
same workgroup, i reinstalled the protocols, adapters, and
clients. i dont know what else to do. it is usually so
easy

For testing, try to enable the guest account on the Windows 2000
Professional system. Then give the guest account access to the share. Did
that work?

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP running on the W2K system?

This should work in eithe direction. Win9x should be able to connect to share on W2k as well as W2k connecting to shares on
Win9x. Make sure that the W2k box has an account that matches the account used to logon to the Win9x box. If the passwords
match, it'll make it easier though this isn't a requirement. Make sure that the W2k box has netbios over TCP/IP enabled. Do not
use the disable or DHCP options for Netbios. From either machine go to Start>Run and type \\machinename\share where
machinename is the name of the other box you want to connect to and share is the name of the share on that box.

If that doesn't work, make sure that you have basic connectivity between these two machines. Try pinging each machine by
name or IP.

.

Simple, just install NetBuie protocol in the Win 2000
machine. This will for sure make the two pc talks. This
is a common solution.
