Thermal requirements for SSD

Do SSDs need airflow. What operating temperature is safe? Can they sit next
to normal hard drives - there is a 0.5cm air gap at the moment, but the SSD
is getting warm.

SSD is a Crutial M4 128GB.

That drive, pretty typically, can operate from 0 to 70C. It dissipates very
little power on its own so most of the heating will be from outside. As
long as your drive is staying at a reasonable temperature then whatever
cooling and spacing you have provided is probably alright.
