Recently installed an AMD Barton 2500 (retail version with fan). There was
no thermal gel with package. Is it because the newer fans are more
efficient or is it still advisable to apply (assuming that it does not void
the warranty)?

Thanks

Check the temps under load,

If they are within spec say around 50 Deg C or below then don't worry.

Retail heatsink + fan that comes with the CPU has a grey or white pad under
the heatsink. It's not that heatsink are more efficient, well maybe a bit.
But the main reason is for the ease of application. All you need to do is
but the heatsink + Fan on the cpu and you're set. That's all you need. It
does the same thing as thermal paste. However, remember that if you ever
get to remove that very same heatsink from your CPU after being used, then
you cannot re-use your heatsink with whatever pad is left under it.. You
will have to scrape it off and than apply some thermal paste. As for
warranty, I would doubt that it would voids any warranty as in general,
thermal paste when properly applied will always be better then a pad.

hope this helps

Actually I seem to remember AMD stating a while ago that some heatsink
compounds do in fact void the warranty.

It is also worth remembering that with heatsink compounds (thermal paste)
less is more. You don't need lots of the stuff Just a very thin smear as
it's main purpose is to fill in any surface profile missmatch between the
two surfaces you want to conduct heat.

You HAVE to apply thermal grease if you hope to cool the CPU. Always.

You are WRONG. Applying thermal grease (paste) can and will void the
AMD brand of CPU warranties.

.... and yet, any seasoned user does so for their system
because of the higher thermal conductivity and much easier
job of cleaning off the TIM if/when the need arises.
Depends on whether you need to be told what to do or already
know I suppose.
