Hi

I've just reformatted WinXP Home with SP1, so I downloaded and installed the
updated hotfixes from Microsoft windows update site, I then downloaded some
other non critical but recomended fixes, but I noticed in Add and remove
that about 20 of the fixes had (SP2) in the title so I deleted them thinking
it was part of SP2, they did give a warning but to my deeep shame I ignored
it.."sigh" and on reboot the machine was stuck in a loop reaching the step
before the welcome screen, so I booted to "Last known good" which got me on
but the coulour scheme wasn't right, so then I done a system restore but to
no avail, so I applied a recent "Files and setting" back up, but that didn't
do any good either, so I suppose something is not right with the system and
I was hoping someone could either tell me how to apply the windows classic
colour theme cause at the moment if I chose it from display properties it
still stays the same, or maybe how to refresh and reload themes.

Normal. Hot fixes marked SP2 are those that were released between SP1 and
SP2. Folks that have SP2 installed, see their hot fixes marked with SP3.

For the display issues: Check your display settings. Is 32 bit color
available? If yes, use it. If it was available and is now gone, reinstall
your display driver.

If themes still seems broken, check out the theme topics on this page:

Hi

Well I didn't know that a hotfix marked (SP2) is for a system with SP1
installed, and also I couldn't find anything about broken themes or how to
re-install or repair/restore them from the link you provided.
I think I've probably damaged more than the themes on my system by deleting
the hotfixes in add and remove, but that's the only thing I've noticed.
There used to be a theme called Windows XP style I think, and that has gone
and now I'm left with Windows classic on the themes tab. I think I probably
need to do a repair from my recovery cd or re-install files??
Anyway I'll wait and see if someone can elaborate on this...Thanks.

The page has topics listed alphabetically. Scroll down to the TH area.
There are several suggestions and links to fixes that will restore themes.
Some of these address the other parts of the issue you've included in this
post.

Another thought: Be sure that the Themes service is running in
Administrative Tools> Services.

Since you've just reinstalled XP, I thought about suggesting doing it
again. It may be more efficient in the long run to get a good base install
going instead of trying to fix this one. That's a decision you'll have to
make on your own though.

I would recommend that you go back to Windows Update and reinstall any
and all patches that you removed. Unless I know that a patch is
causing me a problem, I never remove one. SP2 checks to see what
patches are already installed and doesn't reinstall them.

Thanks for that it done the job, but when instructed to restart the computer
and I complied the system wouldn't restart, even from the start command.
Also the last time I shut down by the power button and that's when the
system was looping to just before the welcome screen.
So I closed my internet connection opened task manager and shut down my AV
program/Trend spyware/ad-watch/norton ghost tray and fortunately the system
restarted, thought I'd mention it incase it's helpfull to anyone else.

Once again thanks to all.
