The Worm!

I had a problem with Windows shutting down frequently. The
error message said something about the RPC service.
I thought if I disabled that service things would be fine -
- wrong answer. Since then I've had more problems. I can't
open the properties for that service to re-enable it. In
fact I can't do anything.

This was all before I heard about the worm. As a last
resort, I decided to reinstall Win XP to see if that would
fix the problems. Another bad choice. Now, I get a fatal
error message, Windows shuts down, reboots and starts the
setup process again. It's a cycle. I can't get into safe
mode or do anything. The only thing it will do is continue
setup, fatal error, shutdown.

I'm so frustrated. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd
like to boot in DOS and just reformat the hard disk, but I
don't know how to get there.

Please, I'm desperate.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

You need to enable the firewall. unplug your phone line.
Go to start control panel, go to internet and network
connections. You shoulds see some icons there. Right click
on the icon go to properties hit the advanced tab and
enable the firewall. Do this on all all the icon you can.
You know should be able to log on. Plug the telephone line
back in. Go to www. microsoft.com ang get the worm
extractor download. GGod luck!

Nicholas,

Thank you very much for the information. I was able to
reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP -- with
your much appreciated assistance.

Apparently I still have a virus that is causing problems.
Now when I start up the computer I get an error message
(in DOS, not Windows, it doesn't get to windows):

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
