The whole document becomes formatted

I use Microsoft Word 2002, SP3 and XP Pro, SP2.

Sometimes when I highlight the title of a document and press the icon for
centering it or making it boldface, the entire document becomes centered or
boldface. This is true even if I create a section break after the title.

The problem is intermittant: it happens in some documents and not others.

I'd be grateful for help.
