The Welcome Screen and unread mail count

When the Welcome Screen appears (the one with all the Users), along side
the Picture and Name appears a count of the unread mail. In this instance
the user manages their account with Outlook. Is there an option in outlook
that disables this 'feature'? Does the same happen when I use messenger?
