Ok guys,.... I'm exhausted with this PC but searched out the info that
when a blank CD is put in the CD drive a window is supposed to open up -
and you can use that WXP software to burn your backup files. NO WINDOW
opens, nothing happens when I insert a blank CD. I can't so a search for
this SW as it doesn't have a name. How do I find it?

I'm very frustrated with W-XP. I never had these problems with 95 and 98.
Another aggravation is the helpfiles NEVER cover the problems - they just
tell you what is supposed to happen. >:-( They never tell you what to
do when it DOESN'T HAPPEN!

TIA

FS..... how is the WXP burner program located or found????

I hear you on the 'exhausted' piece with W-XP.
Anyway...your 'windows media' or 'real one' icons are
what you use to store, record, and play CD's DVD's etc.
They should be sitting right on your desktop... If not,
click the start button, then click the 'all
programs'button, and you are sure to find both programs
in that folder. - OR- use the internet explorer or msn
browser to search for 'microsofts program support' pages,
I have found step by step 'how to's'which has been very
helpful for me. "GOOD LUCK!"

nm the other person
put the disk in then just drag and drop all the files you
want on the disc to your cd-rw in my computer or copy and
paste. then when you have all of them there just open it
it will show files waiting to be written to disc on the
left of the window should be an otion "write these files
to disc" or something along those lines click it and
follow the wizard. i know that will help, Cliff

Is it possible that the CD recorder is not enabled.
Try Start>>My computer>>Right Click CD Drv>>Select
Properties>>Select Recording Tab>>Check Mark In the
Enable recording Block>>click OK

Be aware that the maximum you can write to a CD is around 620MB. So if you have backups that are that size or less then you should simply be able to right click on the folder and then click the" send to" and then choose the appropriate drive. If you have a bunch of small files that you want written to the same CD then right click on each and click the send to. This will give you a "files waiting to be written to CD" icon in your taskbar. Click it and you can figure out from there. You can do this multiple times until a CD is full (around 620MB). XP does not have disk spanning capabilities in any of it's programs so if you want to do a continous write to multiple disks you will need a program like Norton Ghost that will end on one disk and begin on the next without loss of data or failure of a program to have all it's components. Good luck.

This is in reply to ALL of you. Thanks so much for all your patience and
help. I'm almost glad this PC is going back for "repairs" and I'll be
using my old HP w/W-98 while it's gone. Now, I'll see if I can get a
good burn with "Real One." MMJ and RecordNow are the sorriest burner
programs I've ever worked with. And of course the drive HP provides isn't
exactly "high" quality. When the PC comes back I just may replace with a
better CD drive.

I know this is off topic - but what burner program are you guys (and
ladies) using on your PCs to burn both Data and Audio? My favorite
(another aggravation) called "EZCD Creator" wont work on W-XP. Any
recommendations on what works well on XP?

Once again, thanks for all your help!

Try Nero Burning ROM 6 from Nero.com. They offer a 30 day trial.

Thanks,... that's one I had heard about awhile back. Will try it. I do
burn a lot of CDs, both data backups and music.

EZCDC V5 & V6 work on XP provided you download the latest updates from
Roxio

I have the older version BEFORE Roxio took it over. I think it's 4.5.
Roxio, in it's greed, cut us all off from any updates. In fact I received
an e-mail from them to upgrade for $99.00 shortly after they bought out
Adaptec.

Both Roxio EXCD 5 and 6 have issues with Windows XP, even when patched. Look
in to Nero or another product.

Thanks for the advice and warning. We were going to pick it up within the
next few weeks. I'll go with Nero. My husband has it on his PC and it's
worked flawlessly for the past 3 years. I need something BETTER than HP
provided. The built-in XP burner never got past the part where it says to
insert the CD. I've decided when we get this PC back from HP I'm going to
replace the crappy cheapo CD-R/RW drive with a good one.

If you decide to go that route, Lite-On makes good, inexpensive optical
drives. A CD burner ~ $40US DVD burner~ $115US They ship with an OEM
version of Nero6.

Do they have that "under-run" feature do you know? $40 sounds awfully
cheap. I would like my next burner to have that feature and burn a little
faster than this poor quality one. But then we (us and the HP techs)
don't know why I'm getting buffer underuns with a 2.60 Ghz CPU and nothing
else running when I burn CDs. I keep getting a error saying the PC can't
keep up with the burner. That's absurd.

Note: the old HP with a 900 Mhz processor never once, that we can recall,
had a buffer underrrun and I did hundreds of both audio and data backups
with it over the years.

I don't need DVD anything since we have no interest in that. ;-)

Yes, all Lite-On models use buffer-underrun protection. Any of the few
coasters I've made were my fault, not those of the software or burner. As
for errors, those can happen when "burning on the fly" which is when you
place the original in one optical drive and the blank CD-R in the burner.
Perhaps the blank media was being written at a higher speed than it was
rated for ?

US$40 isn't too cheap these days. I just paid $70 for a known-name
(Sony) CD-RW drive, but the $20 rebate brought the price down to $50.
I suppose if I'd waited another month or so, the p[rice would have
been even less...

** I assume you tried to use the PC as it was "buring" a CD?

** I never did try that. All the files came from the HD. They were all
either Mp3s the software converts to wavs to burn, or Mp3 backups I burn
as data, or my regular data files.
Perhaps the blank media was being written at a higher speed than it was
rated for ?

** The spindle of CDs says 16X Multispeed. I burn the Mp3s when they
need to be converted to wavs at X4 and data at sometimes X8. The CDs
should be able to handle these speeds easily. I don't touch my PC when
it's burning CDs.

Thanks. I hadn't realized they came down so much..... I'm thinking over
$100 for a good CD-RW/R drive with underrun protection. :-)
