The vanished East End – in pictures

Those photos were interesting, despite the fact I'm not familiar with the locations. I love that history is so well documented nowadays. It's interesting to think that in the future people will be able to look back on the late-19th century onwards and see photos / videos of what it was actually like. For times pre-photography we have to rely on paintings and descriptions, and obviously the further back you go the less information there is. It's pretty cool to think that in 1000 years time people could look back on our time with a much higher degree of accuracy. That's if we don't end up facing a nuclear apocalypse of course!

On some of the buildings around the Hackney area you can still see the advertising that was painted on the outside of the buildings in the 40's and 50's

Some great pix ED. I'm familiar with most of the places shown, having worked in all the state schools in Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

And my first wife went to Stepney Green School.
