Hi guys,

I have ready i don't know how many threads here all about the same thing.
Now i have a similar, very likely the exact same problem as every one else.

basically i can see my vista box from my xp box, but if i try to browse the
vista box, or bring up the list of shared folders/files, i get an access
denied etc message.

i have tried all the reg entries, all the chaning of security policies etc
to no avail. both boxes are definately in the same workgroup. i have tried
new accounts, both with and without passwords.

i am fresh out of ideas.

any help would be highly appreciated

cheers all
Dean

Dean:
This is the only way I have found so far.
Give full access to the Guest and Everyone accounts, both in sharing and
security.
It is dangerous, because it allows remote deleting of files but, so far, is
the only way that works for me.

iv done that on the shares but that isnt the current problem. whereas if you
say for example go \\server it should bring up all your shares, i get an
access denied message. someone else mentioned something about the force guest
something or other about xp home but i dont know anything about this.

all my actual shares are set to have full control for everyone, but i cant
actually get to the shares, i get access denied before then.

cheers

Dean:
Let's go step by step.
Let's assume you have shared a whole drive.
Right click on it, "Properties", "Sharing" and click on "Advanced Sharing".
Click on Permissions.
You should see "Guest" and "Everyone", both with Full Control.
If any of those users is missing, add it with the "Add..." button.
So much for the sharing part.
Click Ok as many times as necessary to close those windows.
Right click again on the shared drive, "Properties", "Security".
Give Full Control to "Guest" and "Everyone".
That should do it.
Use this tip at your own risk!

ok i double checked what you said. still doesn't help with the original
problem.

the computer i am trying to access is called Dean. if i go \\Dean i get
'Access Denied'. if i go \\Dean\C (the drive i am trying to share) i get a
username and password box, and if i enter the correct (double checked this)
username and password i get 'Windows cannot find \\Dean\C. Check the spelling
etc etc'

So i can see the computer but cant access it, not even see the shared files.

Thanks for the help
Cheers

Hello,

In Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel, what are your options set
to? Make sure it is configured like this:

- Network discovery: on
- File sharing: on
- Password protected sharing: on

Also, if you have any other security software installed, make sure they are
not "protecting" you by blocking file sharing.

With these options set, you should be able to have read-access to a shared
drive that you have configured through advanced sharing in the drive
properts screen, after authenticating with your Vista computer. You will
need to assign your user account a password if it does not have one in order
for it to work properly.
