Running windows XP professional and printing (used to be)
with a HP Laserjet 1100. It's been working for about a
year, but had a HD go bad so had to reinstall
everything. Installed printer drivers from disk, tried
to print -- printr light flashes then stops and nothing
prints. I watch the print window as the job spools, goes
to "printing" status, and then is deleted. No
explanation. Tried installing updated drivers from HP,
but to no avail. Here's what I do know.

1. Printer works fine with another machine using same
cable and everything
2. I have a second cannon printer that works fine on
second machine, but behaves exactly the same on my
desktop..light flashes but no printy printy
3. Spooler is started
4. Cables are ok
5. Device manager does not show a printer, rather
shows "Other Devices" with a yellow questionmark.
Whatever the other device is (and I suppose it is my
printer) it claims the driver is not installed.
6. Printer shows up fine under "Printers and Faxes" and
selecting properties of the printer it shows all of the
custom HP options as though the drivers were installed
just fine.

I'm freaking out with this one...my wife thinks I'm
retarted. Please help!!

XP is nutorius for this problem but Microsoft has already
created an Update for this problem. All you need to do is
go the their updates page and download and install it. If
that doesn't work I'm assuming that you used the restore
disk when you got your new hard drive. That's where the
problem comes in. If the update does not work the only
thing you can really do is completely format your hard
drive and install everything manually instead of using the
restore disk.
