HELP!!!!!

I have 2 fairly new Compaq 2100 series laptops running XP
pro version. On one I got this message:
"the tcp/ip network transport is not installed" and I
cannot get on the internet now. I had to reformat my
laptop and reinstall XP and now it works. Now the 2nd one
is doing same message. ANy ideas anyone????

I have traced several of these problems to improperly configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and uninstalling the
owning program might help.

If that fails or your provider list is empty, you may need to rebuild the
catalog from scratch. The following instructions will rebuild your catalog
for TCP/IP. If you are using any other transports (If you don't know, then
you probably aren't) then you will have to reinstall them as well.

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot

Wow! Thanks for your quick response! (I have never posted
here before and am so pleased to see it worked!)

Anyway, I ran "winmsd" and besides the MSAFD and the RSVP
entries, the only other entries are from McAfee_Gdlsp. Is
this ok? I am going to try the 2nd part of your
suggestion now.....
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!

I deleted winsocks and winsocks 2 from the registry and
rebooted. Then I right-clicked on Lan connection and the
properties were all there even TCP/IP like before. You
cannot remove it. But then I clicked "add
protocol", "have disk", c:\windows\inf (just like you
said)and chose first one: Internet (TCP/IP) I think it
was, and it must have refreshed the stack or something.
It looked the same (except it may have had slightly
different entr wording for TCPIP one) but when I rebooted
it all worked again! YAY! Thanks so much! I really
appreciate you taking the time to help out!

What you have done is rebuilt your Winsock catalog. Your McAfee product was
almost certainly the problem, and you have in effect uninstalled it. It is
likely that you will be able to reinstall it without problems.
