I get the message "the system cannot open the device or
file specified" during the beginning of the setup, the
program does not install from this point! any answers

Looks like the installer has become corrupted. Could you
please try downloading the application again and saving
it to another path/drive.

Regards

Mark

I got the same error. I tried downloading the installer a
second time to a different folder with the same results.
Disabling Norton AntiVirus did not help either.

After clicking "Cancel" requester, I received the
following additional message:

"Internal Error 2755. 110, c:\winnt\downloaded
installations\{F62962AA=4F15-93C5-07115A7D4CE}\Microsoft
AntiSpyware.msi". The installer had been downloaded to
c:\temp.

I'm running Windows 2000 SP4.

Some installer errors that have been resolved using Microsofts installer
cleaner tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

I can see how to use this tool when the error message addresses a specific
partially installed previous product, but I'm not sure how it would address
your issues--but you might look into it and see whether it shows you
anything relevant on your systems.

I ran the Windows Installer Cleaner program and (believe it
or not) I got the SAME ERROR MESSAGE from the cleaner: "the
system cannot open the device or file specified". When I
clicked "Cancel", I got the additional message: "Internal
Error 2755. 110,
C:\DOCUME~1\kevin\LOCALS~1Temp\IXP000.TMP\msicuu.msi"

Isn't that special?

By the way, the installer produced an 86k log file that I
can mail to someone, if they want to look at it.

There's a procedure somewhere to reinstall the Windows Installer in
desparate circumstances, which this is beginning to sound like! Let me see
if I can find it...

Well, I didn't find what I thought I had remembered, but this looks worth
trying:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891985

I'd say try just the first part--the re-registering msiexec.

Here's a complete download for the current version of the installer,
presumably applying that should reset stuff to a usable condition:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-b259-4733-a914-a956122e08e8&DisplayLang=en

I'm in over my head here--but these steps look reasonably safe and likely
not to make things worse than they already are on your system.

I was able to fix this problem by removing NTFS file encryption on the 'Temp' and 'Downloaded Installations' folder.
