The spell check on this document was halted

I'm getting this message in Windows Mail running Vista Home Premium.

I saw other messages that were similar where the suggestion was to switch
from English to another language and back. That did not fix the problem.

FWIW, spell-checker is still working in other MS programs (Word, PowerPoint).

I'm a terrible typist and speller, so having the spell-checker saves lots of
embarrassment. Any help would be appreciated.

I also have Home Premium, and I am having the same problem. All was working,
but then my system froze while I was doing email (my first Vista lockup) and
since I booted up again the email spell checker is no longer working.
 
Hi Gary,

As noted, the problem did not relate to a language error (no longer
available) and I did try that fix just in case.

Any other thought?

Hi Dee,

Thanks, but this not the language issue. The message does not say anything
about a language no longer being available. I've tried, several times,
switching languages just to see if that might be the problem even though the
message does not mention language. It does not fix the problem.

For fun, I changed the language to French and typed in a message in that
language. I still get "An error ocurred while checking this document", which
is parallel to the one that spawned this thread (the entire message including
the statement, "... an error occurred..."

So, putting aside the "switch the language" posisbilities, any other thoughts?

This is a long reach, but the problem could be due to interference
from your antivirus program. Windows Mail is not compatible with
most McAfee or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled.
Then, at your convenience, install a more compatible antivirus
like the free Avast:

Hi Gary,

An interesting thought. I disabled (but did not uninstall) the Norton AV
software that came with the laptop and which has been running all the time
since with no trouble (NAV has caught many a virus and spyware during that
time, so it would seem to work with Mail).

Alas, that did not fix the problem. I can't uninstall since, because the
software was bundled with the computer, the only way to restore would be to
rebuild the laptop from the restore disk. I don't have a couple of days to
restore the computer to its current state (reinstall programs, reconfigure
things, etc.).

Of course, it's possible that A) a full uninstall would fix the problem but
that doesn't answer why things were working for almost six months just fine
or B) that a recent update to Mail, Vista, and/or NAV has upset the apple
cart.

Too many variables, so little time <g>

Use the Programs & Features Facility on the Control Panel to uninstall.
If you can't use that...

There could be a millions and one reasons but knowing why wouldn't help
you in your predicament. It is better to get it fixed than ponder
irrelevances
such as which lines of code are wrong.

It's becoming clear that there aren't many variabes...
Infact it is almost invariably Norton or McAfee that is responsible
for problems with correctly configured Windows Mail.

And again you are wrong about the time issue.
It only takes a few minutes to get rid of Norton and
install Avast.

Don't give up your day job.

You need to read more carefully.

Of course it's easy to uninstalll NAV. It's not easy to reinstall if I want
to put it back. I've been given no _good_ evidence that NAV is the cause
since Vista/Mail/NAV have been working fine for months. This problem is new,
not one that has existed from day one. As Gary said, it was a long shot to
presume that NAV was the problem but it was worth considering.

Unless you can show that recent changes have caused what once worked to stop
working, your absolutism has no foundation.
Don't give up your day job.

Sarcasm is not required or necessary. Diplomacy is a better way to help
solve problems. In fact, I did quit the day job - mostly because I no longer
wanted to deal with attitudes such as yours.

It's not my loss if you can't send email
 
We've had many reports here from people who ran successfully with
Norton or McAfee for several months, then suddenly one day their
Windows Mail is no longer working properly. Upon uninstalling
their antivirus, full WinMail functionality is immediately restored.
Of course, I can't guarantee that will happen in your case.

As far as losing NAV, no great loss. The free version of Avast
is quite good.

I changed the spelling language from English to French and back to English.
No joy. I de-installed my AVG Anti-Virus. No joy. Remember that this all
started with Vista locking up my computer. With Vista I feel that I am
re-living all the old Windows bugs. Printers not working, email spelling not
working ...
