The server is not configured for transactions

We are running a network with a W2k server with AD. DNS and DHCP.

It seems we've got a problem on our Win2k server. The AD or DNS returns a
message like "<domain> is not accessible. The server is not configured for
transactions" then we are trying to browse the domain thruu network
neighbourhood.
We also got two Win98 computers which is not allowed to log on to the
domain. They got the message "Bad domain password, or you do not have contact
with the domain".
Is there anybody out there who got a clue? Is my AD wrong or can it be
related to the DNS?

It sounds like you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled, also I would recommend
using WINS if you are going to use Network places. WINS is more reliable
than NetBIOS broadcasts for NetBIOS resolution.

Thanks for your answer. I have checked the issues you told me, but it didn't
help. NetBIOS over TCP/IP was enabled and functioning ok.

Any other suggestions? Is there any virus which can cause this?

Possibly, but I'm not a virus expert, I don't know of any specifically.

As Kevin said, Network Neighborhood relies on NetBIOS, but I would like to
point out that Network Neighborhood has nothing to do with DNS.

Now, about the other problem, you mentioned:

This would definitely more than likely be a DNS issue. To resolve this,
we'll need assitional info, such as:

1. Unedited ipconfig /all
2. Name of your AD DNS domain name
3. Name of the zone in DNS and if updates are allowed
4. If the SRV records under the zone exist (which is what AD is actually
looking for when it looks for the domain).

Thank you for your time. It seem now to be a virus which caused the problems.
The ntfs16.exe virus, or GABOT. It also removed our shares on the server, and
caused the server and computers to freeze. Or they got RPCHOST to overflow
and then maked the computer to shut down within 60 seconds, like MSBLAST
virus.

Our Panda antivirus didn't find the virus. Do anyone of you know Panda
antivirus?

Best regards

Ouch!

I usually recommend Norton Corporate for my clients. Seems to work fine for
me. I haven't seen this virus yet, nor have any of my clients called me with
any problems lately, so I'm assuming it caught it.
