Just recently - IE 6.0.2 stopped working. I can't access the internet and all
I get is "The page cannot be displayed" I had to install Opera to get to the
Microsoft web site. I can't even uninstall as it does not (I repeat - does
NOT) display in the Add/Remove programs list. I'm running Win XP Professional
2002, SP2. And ideas on what the problem could be or how to correct it?

Thanks in advance

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder
**Post your HijackThis log to

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ or the Spyware forum at

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

for the new Microsoft program which was previously released by Giant
Software.

Thank you. I got pretty much the same information in a message that was
written after mine. I used a product called The Ultimate Troubleshooter from
answersthatwork.com which told me how to remove DeskAdKeep.exe and
DeskAdServ.exe. I also downloaded Ad-Aware and ran that as well as Spybot.
System is working fine now.

All -

I have a similar problem, but only with ONE url -
www.weatherunderground.com. I get the dreaded Page Cannot be Displayed
in IE6. I browse hundreds of other sites with no problems, but cannot
get to the one above.

I'm using WinXP SP2 & cable connection.

I've tried every tip I have seen (all the spyware scans, delete temp
files, reset web settings, flush dns, delete cookies, etc.) with no luck
at all.

This makes no sense to me, since it is only the one site I am having
problems with. I CAN get to the above URL just fine through my PocketPC
using the same cable connection (WiFI).

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

Frank -

Thanks for the assistance.

I have already tried all of the things you mention with no success
(rebooting after as well). I'll give it one more shot.

Any more ideas? This is very frustrating....

Thanks.

Still no luck here. Weather Underground folks and my isp gave me some
more things to try, but nothing.

www.wunderground.com is the ONLY site I cannot get to on either IE6, or
Firefox.

Remains frustrating.....
