I am using XP and IE 6 with all the updates.

When I log on to my ISP, ATT, 95% of the time I get "the page cannot be
displayed". Usually when I click on the "home" button the page will then
come up. After 4 sessions with the ATT support staff checking and changing
settings, they finally told me to format my hard drive and reinstall all my
software (easy for them to say). There has to be an easier way. We have
another computer and when logging on to the same account there never is a
connection problem. Obviously there is a setting on my machine that is out
of whack.

Hi...I hope you get a better answer than this, and that
you'll be kind enough to share it with me. I've been on the
phone all morning long with my ISP, and we've tried every
solution they could come up with, short of bringing my
computer in--and I don't like that one any more than the
one you recieved!!
I do have some thoughts:
1: I'm using Win98 and IE6, so there's some difference
there, but....
2: I discovered, after re-installing NETSCAPE, that it's IE
itself...NOT my computer.
3: Last week, sometime, I installed some new 'security'
update from the Win98 site, and I'm really wondering if
that is where the problem began.
4: I do NOT want to take my computer in, format the whole
drive or any of those drastic choises, and I agree totally
that it's just a setting that's off. What I'm going to do
is just uninstall and reinstall IE. If that works, I'll let
you know. And if you find any better answers, could you
PLEASE let me know, too. Email me directly, if you wouldn't
mind.
Thanks, and good luck!
Judy

check out my post above about search engines not working
and try running the Brown U Qhosts cleanup tool I'd like
to bet you've got it. I ran Nortons tool and nothing
Try it it won't hurt if there is not an infection

Tried the Brown U program but it didn't fix my problem. Anyone else have any
ideas?
Thanks Debbie for trying.

You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

It appears that the TCP/IP was goofy. I went to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;299357 and followed
the instructions on how to reset the TCP/IP. For those of us who don't work
on computers for a living, they left out the instructions on where to type
in the "command" to run the Netshell utility. I typed in the Command Sample
in the "run" box and rebooted. After logging on to my ISP, I no longer got
"the page cannot be displayed" message.

Thank you so much for your help. After spending around 4 hours with the
"Unsupport group" at AT&T and accomplishing nothing, your suggestions fixed
the problem in about 10 minutes. Don't know how I would ever keep these
computers running without the help of pros like you and the other MVPs
Thanks again

I spoke too soon. It worked 4 or 5 times and now is back to "the page cannot
be displayed" again. I also try different web sites from my favorites list
and get the same result. This time after trying 3 other sites, I clicked on
Home and after 3 page cannot be displayed results, it finally gave me the
home page. Logic doesn't work for me since no settings are being
changed--just trying time after time by clicking the home button. Any more
ideas?
Richard
