Hi
I am pulling my hair at the roots over this problem.
I have been running XP Pro for about 2 years very few problems until now. At
first I thought it was my ISP but my other computers do not suffer.
Problem:
I log onto a web site spend 2/5 minutes looking though different pages at
reasonable speed when suddenly the system freezes and the page says "The
page cannot be displayed"
"cannot find the server"
I have looked through MS support data, various reasons for this if you are
using 95, 98 but nothing for xp pro.
To get it working again for a short time i have to log off, switch off the
computer & restart again.
I have reset the temp internet files folder to 4000MB still no good.
I have formatted the computer doing a full reinstall, but still got the same
problem.
I have all updates from MS, All update from Norton AV, the computer runs
well BUT......
I subscribe to a forum which requires a user name & password, I have forgot
the password so asked the webmaster via the site to forward the password via
email, although it appears to
send it does not do anything or occasionally comes back saying "The page
cannot be displayed etc"
Does any on have any ideas?

Perhaps your network card is dying. You didn't say how you connect to
the Internet, whether it is through a dialup modem or broadband and a
nic, but whichever it is, try replacing the card with a known-good one
and see if that solves the problem.

I am having this exact problem. I am running windows xp, DSL connection. Last Sunday I was downloading windows xp service pac 1 when it stopped almost completely through downloading.

I canceled the download and within minutes my computer was acting odd, ran AVG virus, and found Sasser worm. It was still acting slow after deleting sasser off, so I did some research and it was recommended to turn off system restore and rerun virus ware. I downloaded Stinger and ran that, finding leftover sasser virus and finally cleared it all out. I also ran Spybot and adaware to clear anything else. I applied Sasser patch and downloaded all other critical/ms updates. I turned off Modem, turned it back on, and ran diagnostics check, everything fine there. Also everything fine on DSL's company end.

Well, like PH, now my internet explorer will only connect to internet for about 20minutes, and then every address I put in comes up PAGE CANNOT DISPLAY. I have to keep rebooting computer to sustain any type of internet connection. Any ideas or help before I have to redo my entire system? I've noticed several people have experienced this problem previously, but no clear answers as of yet. Obviously there is a pattern, so just hoping someone has solved this puzzle! Thanks for your help. Oh and I also ran a Hijackthis report if anyone needs to see that.
