The page cannot be displayed

Help. Yesterday, sites that I often access (i.e. Yahoo mail) now give me the
message "The page cannot be displayed". I can access those sites from
different computers with no problem.

I have Windows ME operating system and IE 6.0

I haven't had any problems before. I can still access major sites with no
problem (i.e. CNN.com or Microsoft.com - I can even access yahoo.com but not
the mail program)

I have reset my default settings in IE, I have rebooted numerous times, I
updated all recommended updates through Microsoft all to no avail.

Help! I don't know where to go next.

Thanks

Russ,

Try locating a file called HOSTS (no extension!) and rename it OLDHOSTS.

See if that helps.

Thanks for the idea - found the file and renamed - still same problem.

I'm not too technical but have read a bunch today and tried a lot. Still no
success. Pinging www.yahoo.com works fine, but mail.yahoo.com fails.

Makes me think it is in my settings - went back and restored the settings to
the modem and internet connections - still no success.

Disabled my firewall in case that was causing the problem - still no success.

What next?

mail.yahoo.com is an alias

<example>
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: login.yahoo.akadns.net
Address: 209.73.177.115
Aliases: mail.yahoo.com, login.yahoo.com

Try a tracert to see how far you are getting.
Try it with the above alternate names and try it with the above IP address.
Report your observations for all your tests.

hi

i would like to suggest if you be sure about Java software on you PC, and my
quistion to you is;

when you open yahoo, then you click on the e-mail icon, there will be no
responce or it will give you can not find server page?

Thanks. The tracert for mail.yahoo.com timed out after 21 hops (made it to
Palo Alto). The tracert for the IP address (209.73.177.115) made it there
fine. The tracert for login.yahoo.com timed out after 12 hops (made it to
Yahoo, though).

I put the IP numerical address in my address line and it took me to the
login page as I've been trying to do all day. However, once I put in my
login name and password, I got the "page cannot be displayed" error again.

So, something isn't working on the translation from words to IP numbers, I
think. Don't know how to fix it.

Thanks. Java is enabled in my internet settings. I get the response "page
cannot be displayed"

That's strange. Did it show the same IP address each time?

What about the canonical name: login.yahoo.akadns.net
Did you try it too?

Do a View, Privacy Report (Alt-V,v) or a View Source Alt-V,c
and you will probably see that the page is reverting to domain name
in src= URLs instead of letting the IP address work for them too.

Well, you should notify your ISP of your findings.
It's their problem to fix for you. Assuming you are getting the right lookup
(See question #1 above.) the only thing that I can think of is that somehow
somewhere along the path that particular domain name is being blocked.
If so, it would be up to them to either explain the blockage, remove it
or help you find a workaround (e.g. alternate path.)

BTW this may not be the best newsgroup for getting more help
with this issue. Here's a troubleshooter which contains a link
to one for followup questions:

Good luck

Hi Russ, hope you see this...did you ever find a solution for this problem ?
I am experiencing something similar, where certain websites cannot be
displayed whereas others are fine. I am puzzling over it, and have tried many
suggested fixes without success.
