I have been getting this message for the last two days - completely unable
to access any site (http:// or www format).
Using win 98 SE and IE 6.0.2800.1106 (SP 1 with ten "Q" updates).
Have done a "Repair" to IE6, but still get the same error. Also tried three
ISPs, with same result.
I have the Google tool bar installed and have also tried blocking/allowing
site popups. In fact, tried all combinations without success.

Help please.

Keith,
The first thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

Have scanned with AdAware and SpyBot. One of them (can't remember which)
found "Alexa" in the registry (HK-LM\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions), which I accepted the remove option.

As IE repeatedly gives me "The page cannot be displayed / Cannot find
server" I cannot access the two sites you suggest.

PINGing successful at MSDOS prompt.

I have run AdAware and SpyBot, one of which found "Alexa" in the registry.
I accepted the remove option - this was today: IE6 started producing the
"The page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server" errors yesterday.

If I try to access the site you suggest I get "The page cannot be displayed
/ Cannot find server" - just like any other attempt to use IE6.

My home page is set to "about:blank", which has not been hijacked.

I have now restored the previous version (5.5) of IE (Add/remove programs |
IE6 SP 1) and still got the "The page cannot be displayed / Cannot find
server" error.

I then downloaded IE6 SP 1 from www.microsoft.com (accessed using Windows
Explorer as IE would not load the page at the MS site) and installed it.
Still get "The page cannot be displayed / Cannot find server" when trying to
access a web site.

The PC was rebooted after both the restore and installation of the fresh
download prior to launching IE5/IE6.
