Okay - in Windows XP i use to disable this horrible starup-sound - i really
hate it (seriously hate it). Normally i would rename the file, like
off_Windows Startup.wav mostly because XP liked to tease me and enable it
again, even though i just disabled it in the media-manager. But this
horrible wave-file has found its way to Vista: first this horrible sound and
then the new ba-diiiiiiing which i really like and want to keep - it
actually got the new old file name Windows Startup.wav. I really would like
to get rid of this horrible left-over-fanfare from XP - i have searched my
entire disk for *.wav but without any luck - of course this sound isnt
represented in the media-manager so i cant disable it the 'official way' -
anybody? - i intensly hate this sound so help me get rid of it

Hi Peter,

I disabled it through the Control Panel/Sound applet on the Sound tab - have
you tried this?

that was what i ment by:

"of course this sound isnt represented in the media-manager "

- i guess this is another 'secret' Vista-Evalutaion-Program-Feature - nothin
works as it was supposed to

but anyway - what is the text called in the sound-applet?

Okay - i disabled all sounds - by choosing the 'No sound' scheme and its
still there... this is definatly a secret Windows Vista-feature...

In build 5728 you can disable it from the Control Panel - Sounds
In build 5600 you need a Resource Hacker to do it. It has been addressed
here before
''To disable the sound follow these steps.

1.Download PE Explorer from http://www.pe-explorer.com
2. Open PE Explorer and open %windir%\system32\authui.dll
3. Then go to View -> Resources
4. Then Highlight WAVE and Press Delete
5. Save the file and then click yes if you want it to update the Image Size

You are going to have to take ownership of the file to make any changes
I copied it - edited the copy - renamed copy - copied edited version back to
system 32 -
renamed original - deleted original - renamed copy to original name -
authui.dll - a fun/learning experience

Control Panel>Hardware and Sound > change system sounds - there is a
checkbox on the Sounds tab to 'Play Windows Startup Sound'. Uncheck it.

In 5728 you just remove a check from a box. The sound is not played any
longer.

In build 5600 you can right click on the Desktop, select personalize, click
Sound Effects, scroll down till you find the 'Windows Start' sound, and then
select None in the list of sounds in the drop down box.

The sounds are all stored in the \Windows\Media\ folder

Or, if it really bothers you that much, turn the speakers down.

Bones, Peter was referring to the sound that plays before you login, it
plays when the users list appears.

In build 5600 you couldn't turn off this sound at all (even when choosing
the no sounds scheme) and it did bother many people so in build 5728 they
added a check-box to turn it off.

As pointed out by others, you could use a hack to turn it off, but if you
aren't experienced at using a program like Resource Hacker, or the
equivalent, you could make your system unusable.

Better to upgrade from build 5600 to build 5728, you can turn it off without
risk and the system seems a lot more stable (even as stable as 5600 was) now
anyway.
