when i try to open a file through my software, it appears to be set in order of 'date last modified' instead of 'name'. i've made sure that all my folders are set in order of 'name', but still the problem persists. it's not exactly the end of the world, but it makes searching through hundreds of files a bit of a pain. i know i can change the settings to 'name' every time i open or look for a file, but surely there's an easier way.

Hello craig,

If you are using standard Open File dialog then you can automatically select
your file just typing in the box the first few letters of the file name that
uniquely identifies it. Though it's a bit tricky: open dialog, click on the
first file in a list and then start typing. And this is true for all lists
you can find in the system.

just like in the explorer window, you can sort how the Open Files dialog
sorts the files it displays: just double click the desired column's
header.

So, in explorer you can sort by date if you like, but in File Open you
can sort by name.
